OTTAWA, ON--(Marketwired - October 27, 2016) - Energy and Mines, the leading information source for renewables and energy innovation in mining, has released the final shortlist of international mining companies eligible for awards based on their investments and commitments to renewables. The shortlist includes a geographically diverse group of mining operators with a wide variety of project sizes using wind, solar and solar thermal technologies to power their operations.

"This is the first time mining leaders will receive international recognition and awards for their investment in these technologies which are helping drive down energy costs and carbon emissions for mining operations," commented Dr. Andrew Slavin, Director, Energy and Mines. "We are delighted to recognize and celebrate these mines that are leading the way for other mines to adopt similar solutions." See below for the full shortlist or click here to view.

"We are seeing a 'perfect storm' brewing around renewables," Russell Blades, Director of Energy and Climate Change at Barrick Gold, recently told Energy and Mines. With just under 1000 MW of installed capacity, according to the Energy and Mines Global Rankings, renewables for mines is now firmly established as a critical market segment for the global renewable energy industry. Industry experts predict continued growth for this sector as mines face increasing carbon exposure and energy cost pressures. As Sunil Kansal, Senior Manager, Deloitte, said recently, "More and more miners are considering renewables as a way to meet sustainability targets and decrease their carbon footprints."

The Energy and Mines Renewables in Mining Awards will present awards to mining leaders in 13 categories on the evening of November 21st at the Hilton Toronto, co-located with the 4th annual renewables for mines conference, Energy and Mines World Congress November 21-22. Awards attendees will be senior mining, renewables, finance and government leaders. Sponsors include the Carbon War and Canada Clean Fuels and Export Development Canada, Barrick Gold and IAMGOLD are table hosts at the gala reception and dinner.
