DataGen Launches WebFOCUS Analytic Solution to Boost Profitability for Healthcare Providers

New Analytic Portal Sheds Light on the Financial Implications of Shifting Healthcare Payment Policies

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Nov 1, 2016) - Information Builders, a leader in business intelligence (BI) and analytics, data integrity, and integration solutions, today announced that DataGen, a subsidiary of Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS), has launched an analytics portal based on the WebFOCUS BI and analytics platform that helps healthcare organizations understand the financial implications of payment policy changes, as they make the transition from volume-based to value-based purchasing. WebFOCUS also helps DataGen's clients improve their population health programs and increase revenue from Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurers.

Value-based purchasing is part of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS') long-standing effort to link Medicare's payment system to a value-based system that improves healthcare quality. Many healthcare organizations are pursuing the Triple Aim: improving population health, enhancing the quality of patient care, and reducing the per capita cost of healthcare. Working with Information Builders, DataGen has created a customized BI solution that helps these organizations comply with the Triple Aim goals, even as they enhance efficiency and boost their bottom lines.

"We wanted to invest in a BI solution that we could easily expand as we take on new clients," said Kelly Price, vice president and chief of Healthcare Data Analytics, DataGen. "Information Builders impressed us with its technology, its support, and its excitement about having us as a client. WebFOCUS allows business users to analyze data without relying on IT professionals or skilled analysts. The real winners are our clients, since they receive more insight and better reporting options."

Price and her colleagues used WebFOCUS to create an analytic portal that improves the user experience for hundreds of healthcare providers, payers, and state associations that subscribe to DataGen services. Previously, these clients used Microsoft Power Pivot and SharePoint to generate reports. However, it took analysts up to two hours to change templates and add them to SharePoint. The Microsoft solution lacked scalability and had only rudimentary self-service tools for business users.

WebFOCUS improves scalability and enables greater functionality for DataGen clients. Its flexibility and ease of development are especially useful as clients seek to analyze bundled payments or "episode of care" payments for specific illnesses, conditions, and medical event such as knee replacements, pregnancies, and heart attacks. WebFOCUS helps them visualize 90-day benchmarks of these episodes, from the summary level down to the specific details of each procedure, via interactive charts and graphs.

According to Price, the inherent scalability of the WebFOCUS platform allowed DataGen to roll out its new analytic environment quickly and add more clients than it had initially planned. Phase 1 of the portal is being launched this month to hospitals and healthcare associations across the country. During phase 2, DataGen plans to use WebFOCUS to add predictive analytic capabilities to the portal.

"At a time when the healthcare industry is responding to pervasive changes in financial policy, DataGen is using analytics to help its clients understand the implications," said Gerald Cohen, president and CEO of Information Builders. "Having a user-friendly portal with self-service BI capabilities will help these organizations simplify the complexities of healthcare payments, resulting in better, more cost effective services for patients."
