Two Iles-de-la-Madeleine organizations will improve their community infrastructure

The Government of Canada supports Centre Alfred Gallant and Club nautique du Chenal projects

ÎLES-DE-LA-MADELEINE, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - Nov. 5, 2016) - Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED)

Key local stakeholders have long been asking for concrete, sustainable measures to improve community and recreational infrastructure. The Government of Canada is proud to invest in projects such as these ones by the Centre Alfred Gallant and the Club nautique du Chenal, which contribute to the strength and vitality of all regions of the country.

Acting on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for CED, the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Member of Parliament for Gaspésie-Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine and Minister of National Revenue, announced that $408,710 in overall financial assistance has been granted to two Îles-de-la-Madeleine projects under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP150).

The Centre Alfred Gallant has been awarded $185,500 in financial assistance for the improvement of its outdoor skating rink and the addition of a roller sport track. The Club nautique du Chenal has been granted $ 223,210 in financial assistance for the rehabilitation and improvement of the Havre-aux-Maisons marina.

Created in 1982, the Centre Alfred Gallant has provided the region's residents with a place to ride horses, walk, play hockey, skate and line dance. The non-repayable contribution will enable it to install a cement surface, a water outlet, lighting and carpeting. The organization will also be able to add a space for skating rink users in the main building.

The Club nautique du Chenal's mandate is to give the Îles-de-la-Madeleine community and tourists access to key recreational boating and water sports equipment and infrastructure. The non-repayable contribution will enable the organization to move the harbour master's office, install it on a four-foot foundation and add a terrace, lobby and washrooms. The Club nautique will also take the opportunity to refit the interior, move the repair shop, replace the roof and windows, improve the electrical installations on the wharves and in the buildings, upgrade the walkway and the outdoor lighting, and retrofit the boat ramp.

It is in places such as these that we are able to better explore our differences and more fully appreciate the many cultures that give life to our region."

The Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Member of Parliament for Gaspésie-Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine and Minister of National Revenue

The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister responsible for CED

"Thanks to CED's financial support, the Centre Alfred Gallant will be able to diversify its activities and meet the needs of Îles-de-la-Madeleine residents more effectively by providing them with a multisport centre and a venue for sports events and family gatherings. For an organization such as ours, the project will have a significant impact and attract a larger clientele."

Jean Guy Decoste, President of the Centre Alfred Gallant

"The revitalization of a site such as the one at La Pointe de Havre-aux-Maisons requires substantial ongoing effort. That is why it is essential to have effective equipment that is ready for service. CED's financial support is enabling the Club nautique du Chenal to anchor the organization's involvement in the area and in the community in a significant way. La Pointe de Havre-aux-Maisons has a rich past and, together, we can ensure that its future will be just as promising."

Gustave Lapierre, Secretary Treasurer of Club nautique du Chenal Inc.
