More talent and expertise appointed to Waterfront Toronto Board


TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Dec. 7, 2016) - The Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, today announced three federal appointments to the Waterfront Toronto Board of Directors. These new Directors, from various backgrounds and fields of expertise in Toronto, will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Waterfront Toronto initiative.

Sevaun Palvetzian is the CEO of CivicAction, an organization that engages with leaders from all sectors to address urban challenges in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton region. Ms. Palvetzian is an engaged member of the Toronto community and has several years of experience working as a senior executive in the public service.

Janet Rieksts-Alderman is a partner at Examine Construction Consultants Canada, a team of engineers and construction consultants who provide expertise on project execution and construction. Ms. Rieksts-Alderman has more than 18 years of experience, is a Certified Professional Accountant, Certified Management Accountant and is a specialist in project governance and audit.

Mazyar Mortazavi has been in the development business for 16 years and is the CEO and President of TAS, an urban development company that is a leader in design, development and construction, and has twice been awarded the Green Developer of the Year award.

In spring 2016, Infrastructure Canada launched a successful application process to find experienced, engaged and enthusiastic members of the public to serve on the Waterfront Toronto Board. The selection process was open, transparent, merit-based, and reflected the diversity of Canada's population.

As we move forward with these appointments, Infrastructure Canada would also like to thank Mr. Mark Wilson for his dedication and significant contributions to Waterfront Toronto as Chair of the Board of Directors since January 2007 and as a member of the Board of Directors since 2002.

  • Ms. Palvetzian and Ms. Rieksts-Alderman will be commencing their terms effective December 1, 2016. Mr. Mortazavi will be commencing his term effective January 1, 2017.
  • Waterfront Toronto (formally "Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation") is a partner corporation that was established in 2001 by the Governments of Canada and Ontario and the City of Toronto to oversee, lead and deliver the renewal and revitalization of Toronto's waterfront.
  • The corporation has a 25-year mandate and $30-billion long-term plan to transform 800 hectares of brownfield lands on Toronto's waterfront into beautiful, accessible and sustainable mixed-use communities and dynamic public spaces - one of the largest infrastructure projects in North America.
  • All three levels of government are represented on the Board of Directors, which oversees Waterfront Toronto's business and affairs. The Minister of Infrastructure and Communities is responsible for appointing federal members.
