NEW YORK, Jan. 19, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Dr. Anthony J. Viera of UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine has been selected to join the Physician Board at the American Health Council. He will be sharing his knowledge and expertise on Primary Care, Epidemiology, Evidence Based Medicine, and Family Medicine.

With over two decades of experience in the field of Family Medicine, Dr. Viera offers valuable insight in his role as Professor and Family Physician at UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Considered a leader in the transformation of healthcare, UNC Chapel School of Medicine strives to train the next generation of healthcare professionals who will utilize their research and education to improve the overall health of all patients.  As Professor and Family Physician at UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine, Dr. Viera’s day-to-day responsibilities include clinical practice; educating students, residents, and fellows; performing research on hypertension, ambulatory and home BP monitoring, as well as nutritional and obesity related research.

Dr. Viera earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1996. Subsequently, he completed his residency at Naval Hospital Jacksonville in 1999. In 2006, Dr. Viera earned a Master in Public Health from UNC Chapel Hill. He is Board Certified in Family Medicine and is also certified as a Clinical Hypertension Specialist by the American Society of Hypertension.

His desire to pursue a career in medicine developed as a young boy. Dr. Viera recalls during his family medicine residency, he became interested in evidence based practice and the research required to improve clinical care for patients.

Dr. Viera maintains affiliations with the American Heart Association, American Society of Hypertension, American Academy of Family Physicians, Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, and Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) - Honor Medical Society.

Among his many accolades, Dr. Viera is proud of his nearly two hundred published articles and several textbooks, as well as his research team’s successes. The UNC Family Medicine Center in which he practices has achieved  Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home Recognition.

Dr. Viera has been named several times in the Best Doctors in America, and has received numerous teaching awards, grants, and research awards. He was also named a Fellow of the American Heart Association.

He attributes his success to having a passion for the field, exceptional time management skills and an efficient devotion to all missions in academic medicine.

Looking ahead, Dr. Viera hopes to serve as a department chair at some point in the next several years and later become involved in institutional leadership.
