Amarin Corporation CEO, John Thero, to Chair the American Heart Association’s Heart & Stroke Ball in New York City

NEW YORK, BEDMINSTER, N.J., and DUBLIN, Ireland, March 21, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association announced today that John Thero will serve as chairman of its annual Heart & Stroke Ball scheduled for June 14, 2017 in New York City.

The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association’s annual Heart & Stroke Ball is a premier event that will celebrate the impact the American Heart Association community has on building healthier lives. This year’s event is inspired by The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. As we travel with Dorothy down the yellow brick road, we will highlight research advances funded by the American Heart Association and introduce characters that represent all the ways heart disease and stroke impact our community. We all need a healthy HEART, healthy BRAIN, and the COURAGE to fight the number one and number five health threats to all Americans.

“Amarin Corporation and its CEO, John Thero, bring passion and great leadership to the Heart & Stroke Ball. The American Heart Association is very pleased with their support and participation in this year’s event,” said Kathy Kauffmann, Senior Vice President in NYC. “Their long-term dedication to finding therapeutic solutions which improve cardiovascular health exemplify the spirit of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.”

Mr. Thero is the Chief Executive Officer, President and a Director at Amarin Corporation. Amarin Corporation is a biopharmaceutical company focused on the commercialization and development of therapeutics to improve cardiovascular health. Under his leadership, Amarin has invested some $300 million in cardiovascular research with the goal of improving patient care.

“It is an honor to contribute to the mission of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association through their initiatives to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans,” said Mr. Thero. “The American Heart Association is committed to building healthier generations and I look forward to being an integral part of that effort for years to come.  I urge everyone to participate in and contribute to the annual ball, the proceeds of which will be used toward public education and important research and development to improve cardiovascular health.”

Amarin has a shared interest with the American Heart Association in the future of cardiovascular care, which was highlighted recently during the annual American Heart Association Heart & Stroke Innovation Forum in New York City. Craig Granowitz, M.D., Ph.D., Chief Medical Officer at Amarin, was a featured speaker at the full-day forum, which brought together some of the great minds from industry, investment and academia.

“The American Heart Association creates an umbrella environment so that we can convey a bigger picture on how we improve patient care and lower the economic burden of heart disease and stroke,” stated Dr. Granowitz.

With a long-standing tradition of attracting world-renowned business leaders, physicians, professionals, philanthropists and other prominent community members, the upcoming annual event will help raise critically needed funds to support the American Heart Association’s lifesaving research, education and community based initiatives.

Past chairs of the American Heart Association Gala include Dr. Leonard S. Schleifer, Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Dr. Stephen K. Klasko, President and CEO, Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health System.
