Antigonish Affordable Housing Society Receives Financial Support for New Affordable Housing Units

ANTIGONISH, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwired - June 1, 2017) - The Antigonish Affordable Housing Society will receive support from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's Seed Funding Program to develop the second phase of Riverside Estates.

The Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), along with Sean Fraser, Member of Parliament for Central Nova, today announced $81,095 for the construction of ten affordable housing units intended for families living on low income and persons with disabilities. The development will consist of six two-bedroom units for low income families, and four one-bedroom units of which one will be fully accessible.

Quick facts:

  • The Antigonish Affordable Housing Society completed the construction of the first phase of its affordable housing development, Riverside Estate, in April 2017. The funding will be used for architect fees for the second phase of the Riverside Estates development.

  • Riverside Estates is well-located about a ten minute walk from downtown in a newly developed subdivision of high quality single and semi-detached homes. Residents benefit from being close to amenities and to the heart of their community.

  • CMHC Seed Funding program provides non-repayable contributions and interest-free loans to cover soft costs associated with affordable housing projects.

Quotes:

"Through investments in affordable housing, our Government is providing assistance to those who need it most here in Nova Scotia and in all corners of the country. We are committed to making communities stronger through projects like these. These investments help create new jobs and stimulate the local economy, while providing access to safe, affordable homes for Canadian seniors, families and individuals." - Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation

"Our Government is investing in affordable housing to help create jobs and improve the quality of life for families who need it most. This funding will help people in Antigonish access safe and affordable housing that meets their needs." - Sean Fraser, Member of Parliament for Central Nova

"We are grateful for this funding as it provides us with the ability to prepare for Phase 2 of our affordable housing initiative. Inadequate, affordable housing has been a long standing concern for this community. We know poor housing is a major determinant of poor physical, social and mental health. Providing affordable, secure housing is going to reduce the physical, mental and economic stress on those living on low incomes. This, in turn, will lead to a healthier community." - Colleen Cameron, Chairperson, Antigonish Affordable Housing Society
