Construction of 20 Affordable Housing Units for Persons With Disabilities in Coaticook


COATICOOK, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - June 2, 2017) - The governments of Canada and Quebec today marked the launch of a major construction project in Coaticook. Once completed, the building will provide 20 affordable housing units for persons with physical disabilities.

The construction of Habitations Hestia should be completed this fall. This project will meet a need that had been identified by the Association des personnes handicapées de la MRC de Coaticook. In fact, it was this association that initiated the project by creating the organization Habitations Hestia.

The ceremony took place today in the presence of the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie and Member of Parliament for Compton-Stanstead, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC); Guy Hardy, Member of the National Assembly for Saint-François, on behalf of Martin Coiteux, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy, Minister of Public Security and Minister responsible for the Montréal region; and Bertrand Lamoureux, Mayor of Coaticook.

Highlights

  • Through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and the Société d'habitation du Québec (SHQ), the governments of Canada and Quebec are providing close to $1.4 million for the construction of this building, under the Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement (IAH 2014-2019).
  • This project of over $3.1 million also received the support of several partners, including the Fondation Martin-Matte, the Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund and the Regional County Municipality of Coaticook.
  • The Town of Coaticook provided nearly $187,000 for the development of the project.
  • Over $344,000 in additional financial assistance over five years, assumed by the SHQ (90%) and the Town of Coaticook (10%), will enable all the tenants to benefit from the Rent Supplement program, ensuring that they will not pay more than 25% of their income on housing.
  • The Government of Canada also invested an amount of $50,000 through its Enabling Accessibility Fund.
  • An amount of more than $41,000 was granted by the Bureau de l'efficacité et de l'innovation énergétiques of the Ministère de l'Énergie et des Ressources naturelles to ensure that the buildings would meet Novoclimat certification standards.
