Calgary Composting Facility Receives CCPPP Award for Innovation and Excellence in P3s

Toronto, Nov. 03, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships (CCPPP) is proud to announce that the Calgary Composting is the Silver Award recipient in the Infrastructure category of the 2017 National Awards for Innovation and Excellence in Public-Private Partnerships (P3s).

In addition to being the first such facility to be delivered under the P3 model in Canada, the Calgary Composting Facility is also the largest of its kind in North America.

The CCPPP Awards Committee received submissions from across the country, representing a broad range of high quality P3 projects. The committee noted “The DBFOM (Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Maintain) delivery model and solution adopted is directly relevant to many Canadian municipalities seeking environmentally friendly and sustainable treatment of food and yard waste while reducing pressure on landfill facilities.”

Since their inception in 1998, the annual CCPPP awards are a coveted seal of excellence. The 20th Annual CCPPP National Awards celebration will be held on Monday, November 6th, 2017 at the 25th CCPPP Annual Conference at the Sheraton Centre Hotel in downtown Toronto.

Quotes:

“From the design, through the construction and now the operation, the P3 model has been integral to the success of this project and our single-family food and yard waste program. Because the City is able to retain ownership and assess the effectiveness of our partnership after 10 years, it leaves us with flexible options and the ability to adjust the program to meet future waste diversion needs if required.”

Rick Valdarchi – Director, Waste & Recycling Services, Utilities and Environmental Protection, City of Calgary

“This project demonstrated to the private and public sectors that the P3 model can be applied successfully to environmental infrastructure projects resulting in a facility that will benefit the City of Calgary and the community at large for their current requirements as well as allowing for future growth and expansion.”

Harold Reinders – Chinook Resources Management General Partnership

“The Calgary Composting Facility demonstrates two important points. First, public-private partnerships can play a significant role in addressing the infrastructure needs of municipalities and urban centre across Canada. Second, while the private sector partners have been contracted to maintain and operate this facility, it remains publicly owned and controlled.”

Mark Romoff, President and CEO, Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships
