Free Electrons Selects Hygge Power to Participate in International Clean-Tech Energy Accelerator Program

Boulder company one of five U.S. companies — and 30 companies worldwide — selected by global utilities consortium, competing for $200,000 prize

Boulder, March 29, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Hygge Power, a Boulder-based smart plug and home energy storage device company, announced earlier today that it has been selected by Free Electrons, the world’s first global energy startup accelerator program, to participate in the Free Electrons accelerator program. Hygge Power was among more than 500 applicants from around the world and is one of 30 companies — and only one of five U.S. companies — competing for the title of “Free Electrons World’s Best Energy Startup” and a $200,000 prize. The program begins in Lisbon, Portugal on April 3.

“Hygge Power is honored to be among the handful of clean-tech startups invited to participate in the prestigious Free Electrons accelerator program,” said Caleb Scalf, founder and CEO of Hygge Power. “This program will create an unprecedented opportunity for us to share our OPO smart plug and home energy storage device with clean-tech investors and leaders across a global network of 73 million potential customers.”

The Free Electrons program seeks out energy startups that will drive the next generation of ideas in clean energy, energy efficiency, e-mobility, digitization and on-demand customer services. It is designed for energy startups to further refine their products and services with the potential of testing and developing them to a global network of 73 million customers. The 2018 cohort will begin with a one-week boot camp in Lisbon, followed by successive modules in Australia, Silicon Valley and Berlin.

Startups from 16 different countries are represented in the program, and are focused on IoT digitization, smart grids, clean energy and energy management.

Free Electrons was initiated by nine international utilities, which together generate more than $148 billion in combined net income across more than 40 countries: AusNet Services, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), ESB (Electricity Supply Board), EDP (Energias de Portugal), Innogy, Origin Energy, Singapore Power (SP), Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) and American Electric Power (AEP). Free Electrons is supported by Beta-i, a Portuguese organization created to boost entrepreneurship, whose mission is to foster a true innovation culture.
