Orange County Plastic Surgeon Reviews Recovery Process After Eyelid Surgery

Dr. Daniel C. Mills of the Aesthetic Plastic Surgical Institute summarizes the blepharoplasty procedure and reviews the recovery process

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif., May 09, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a facial procedure for patients interested in reversing signs of aging and exhaustion around the eyes. Physical signs of facial stress or aging are commonly manifested in sagging upper or lower eyelids, and can be improved with different techniques. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) reported that in 2016, eyelid surgery was the fourth most popular procedure of the year, with more than 170,000 procedures performed.

Orange County plastic surgeon, Daniel C. Mills, MD, has led his own plastic surgery practice since 1988 and has served on various committees with the ASAPS organization since 1994. Throughout the course of his career, patients have entrusted Dr. Mills with their cosmetic surgery needs. When they meet with him for a consultation, he reviews what qualifies someone as a blepharoplasty candidate and what to expect throughout the procedural process. Dr. Mills will also address all questions that patients have, including the most frequent one, which regards the length of recovery.

Although blepharoplasty is one of the most common surgical cosmetic enhancement procedures for the age group of 65 and older, patients of many ages opt for this type of surgery. Dr. Mills ensures all of his patients have the most accurate information regarding recovery post-surgery. This can be a delicate stage in one’s life, and therefore, Dr. Mills stresses that caring for oneself following the procedure is imperative to a healthy and successful recovery.

While the procedure and recovery after eyelid surgery will vary greatly on a case-by-case basis, the patient can typically expect to return home the day of their surgery. A normal routine can usually be resumed after five to seven days, but taxing exercise routines should only be resumed at least four weeks post-surgery. Patients should also expect to have some swelling and bruising, and the operation area should be iced on and off for the first three days following the procedure. Some pain medication may be prescribed, along with eye drops that should be used once per hour in most cases, and ointment that may be applied around the eyes in the evening. Signs of enhancement may be noticed when the majority of the swelling and bruising subside, which on average takes seven to ten days. It typically takes three to six months before final results are apparent.

Dr. MIlls advises that anyone interested in blepharoplasty should consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon, as they have undergone significant training to meet the standards of this prestigious title. He recommends extensively researching the names of reputable plastic surgeons, asking previous patients about their experience, and ensuring the surgeon in question has their board certification in plastic surgery and not just cosmetic surgery. From there, interested patients should schedule a consultation to determine if blepharoplasty can meet their needs.
