Authorities Push for Stricter Rules and Regulations for Sober Living Facilities in Orange County

SAN DIEGO, May 09, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Authorities push for stricter rules and regulations for sober living Orange County both in local and national levels as the state is becoming the country’s largest concentration camp for the said facility.

The combined efforts from local authorities and lawmakers aim to put a stop on the increasing proliferation of private homes in decent residential areas turning into the sober living facility without a license. Aside from the alarming unlicensed operations, these facilities are run unsupervised, and regulation seems somewhat impossible. Included in the said efforts in monitoring these facilities are five proposals from California lawmakers with the primary purpose of establishing newer guidelines on running these facilities as well as a fine imposition on some practices.

Sober living facilities do not offer programs for drug rehabilitation. These homes aim at providing a support system and environment for people who are all recovering from drug addiction, and sometimes combined with 12-easy-steps program.  California, to date, holds about 1,028 drug rehabilitation facilities that are duly licensed, while an estimated number of more than 2,000 make up for sober living facilities operating without a license. In a small community like Costa Mesa with about 113,000 total population, there are about 160 sober living facilities.

While advocates and local authorities recognize the good work of most licensed homes, not all of these facilities do the same. This situation is where local authorities are trying to double up their efforts. Immediate action is deemed necessary to curb other underlying problems that come with too many unsupervised and unlicensed homes like curbing, secondhand smoke, being too loud, as well as high traffic within the neighborhood.

Sober living facilities provide a safe and healthier environment for people who are struggling with opioid addiction and on the road to recovery. Approval of these bills means one step closer to recovery for them.
