Southern Careers Institute Announces Inaugural Cosmetology Program at Corpus Christi Campus

Texas-based trade school expands Corpus Christi campus with its Southern Star Salon to provide hands-on training experience for cosmetology students

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas, June 05, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Southern Careers Institute (SCI), a Texas-based career education provider, announced today the expansion of its Corpus Christi campus with its new Cosmetology program being introduced as part of the curriculum offered at the campus. The addition of Southern Star Salon, a student run facility on campus, enables the future cosmetology professionals to gain a first-hand learning experience of operating a salon. SCI is holding a ribbon cutting ceremony on June 14, 2018, at 2 p.m. to unveil its salon on the Corpus Christi campus.

The Cosmetology curriculum is designed to empower students to practice hands-on applications of skin care, nail care, hair coloring and styling, while also fostering an aptitude for salon management as part of the program. The course is tailored to immerse students in a salon-like environment to acquire the skills necessary to begin a profession in the beauty industry. With practical experience and professional support, the cosmetology lessons taught to students cover health and safety procedures, as well as cosmetology sciences including: anatomy, physiology, and chemistry.

“The expansion of our Corpus Christi campus with the new Southern Star Salon bolsters the educational courses available to students,” says Jacob Mayhew, CEO of SCI. “Students pursuing a career in cosmetology have the resources on campus to obtain the training and learning experience to develop the expertise to enter their desired cosmetology field.”

Corpus Christi is the latest SCI location to offer the Cosmetology program, joining the school's San Antonio South and Brownsville campuses. The 50-week course prepares graduates of SCI’s Cosmetology program to begin a career as a cosmetologist, stylist, cosmetologist operator, hair stylist, receptionist, and sales or marketing specialist with a cosmetic or beauty salon. In addition, students are taught the business aspects of owning and operating a salon or spa.

Upon completion of the program, students earn skill-based badges to demonstrate their proficiencies in cosmetology and are prepared to take the licensure exam from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations to receive their Cosmetology license.

Registration for the Cosmetology program at the Corpus Christi campus is now open for its inaugural course on July 3, 2018. SCI is holding an open house at the Corpus Christi campus on June 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for individuals to receive a campus tour and learn more about the Cosmetology program, along with the additional courses offered as part of SCI’s robust curriculum for entry-level business, healthcare, technology and skilled trade careers.

SCI is hosting a job fair at the Corpus Christi campus during the open house to connect community members with notable companies in the area seeking to hire educated professionals in those categories that comprise SCI’s curricula.
