Toronto, Ontario Canada, June 21, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- (June 21, 2018) As the sun rises on the longest day of the year ABC Life Literacy Canada (ABC) joins Canadians across the country in celebrating the heritage, diverse cultures and the many contributions of our country’s Indigenous Peoples.
In 2016 ABC adapted our popular financial literacy program to create Money Matters for Indigenous Peoples. Better reflecting the needs of Indigenous learners; workshops impart practical information on spending, borrowing and saving that can be immediately implemented into everyday life.
“We developed Money Matters for Indigenous Peoples in partnership with the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health in Ottawa,” said Mack Rogers, Executive Director of ABC Life Literacy Canada. “We couldn’t be more pleased that these workshops are filling a need and being welcomed by Indigenous communities across the country.”
The program has proven to be very popular with 127 workshops already delivered this year and more scheduled in New Brunswick, Toronto and Vancouver leading up to Indigenous Peoples Day.
To date there have been 256 workshops helping over 3,460 learners manage their money. The Money Matters for Indigenous Peoples program helps learners take charge of their finances, reducing stress about money management so learners can spend their time and energy doing the things that are most important to them. Many in the community will be taking part in celebrations across Canada, such as the June 21st community-based day of entertainment, activities and fun at Trout Lake, organized with the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society (VAFCS). VAFCS ran two workshops in June and has two more scheduled in July.
Money Matters teaches learners financial literacy fundamentals like building credit, establishing spending plans and saving for education or retirement. Thanks to founding sponsor TD Bank Group (TD) and the work of hundreds of TD volunteer tutors who deliver the program to learners across the country.
