SPYRUS Announces Comprehensive Family of Hardware Security Modules for Securing Blockchain Transactions

FIPS 140-2 Level 3 Certified Devices Include Unique “Read Only” Versions Permitting Third Party and End User Monitoring Without Modification

SAN JOSE, Calif., July 17, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- SPYRUS, Inc. today announced the immediate availability of a comprehensive family of Hardware Security Modules (HSMs) for enhancing the security of blockchain transactions. What is often overlooked, is the fact that although blockchains themselves are secure from undetected changes, the security of the chain itself has little or nothing to do with the necessity for end-point security from which all transactions achieve trust. Whether accessed by sensors, peer stakeholders, miners, or even third-party consumers and auditors, if endpoint entities are not authenticated and secured, the blockchain and the entire transaction infrastructure can become contaminated and untrustworthy while the integrity of its data is still maintained. The Merkle Tree hashing process used in the blockchain does not prevent this vulnerability. HSMs fill the software gap in secure digital storage and asset transaction security vital to the privacy of blockchain cryptographic keys and critical parameters that are fundamental to protect peer-to-peer, point-to-point or shared content.

“SPYRUS HSM products uniquely fulfill the requirements for augmenting blockchain security with hardware roots of trust unattainable with software alone”, said Daniel E. Turissini, SPYRUS CTO. “Whether in the form of a P-3X USB 3.0 encrypted storage drive, a bootable Windows To Go or Linux2Go Live Drive, a Rosetta USB digital signature/OTP/authentication device, or a microSDHC TrustedFlash® memory card, each SPYRUS device has achieved FIPS 140-2 level 3 security certification via our embedded Rosetta® Micro HSM and SPYCOS® operating system.”

The SPYRUS FIPS 140-2 Level 3 certified HSM devices include low cost authenticators (Rosetta USB) for use by auditors, end users, and consumers along with hardware encrypted storage (P-3X) and trusted execution environments with local storage capacities to 1 TB for secure offline storage of extensive blockchain structures. The Windows To Go and Linux2Go USB 3.0 live drives are available in “unique to SPYRUS” Read Only versions to permit third party auditors to retrieve and analyze the blockchain data without the risk of inadvertently modifying or inserting unwanted information. SPYRUS Rosetta microSDHC and hardware encrypted TrustedFlash® also contain the Rosetta Micro® as a hardware root of trust, provide encrypted storage up to 64 GB, and PKI support for those endpoints such as mobile devices, embedded systems; as well as, various ‘purpose-built’ devices capable of accepting the microSDHC form factor, including bar code readers, medical devices, and IoT gateways.

Dr Adrian McCullagh, Principal, ODMOB Lawyers, a world-renowned authority and lecturer on blockchain security and application development, affirmed that “Blockchain deployment and its continued use is dependent upon trusted key generation and secure key storage. The SPYRUS HSM ticks all the right boxes due to its FIPS 140-2 level 3 certification which gives peace of mind to all users of the SPYRUS HSM in protecting their blockchain transactions.”

The value of blockchain to commerce and governments has been established in recent years, providing rapid transit for funds, goods and services and a host of digital assets packaged as tokens. The technology embodied in smart contracts and decentralized applications (DApps) is rapidly extending to defense, critical infrastructure, health care, manufacturing, marketing, distribution and supply chain management.

For today’s demanding applications and need for multisignature (multisig) scalability, SPYRUS Hardware Security Modules are supported by firmware and software critical to achieving proof of identification, non-repudiation and accountability. The Cryptographic Operating System (SPYCOS) patented implementation of K of N in all Rosetta HSM devices protects the necessary to activate the peer. The SPYRUS K of N function divides a secret into parts, where each participant/ operation has a unique part and a policy can dictate the requirement for some of the parts or all of them in order to reconstruct the secret.

“All of the SPYRUS security products are available online, through our resellers and distribution partners, and through Insight’s Schedule 70 program, under GSA Schedule GS-35F-0009U”, said Tom Dickens, SPYRUS COO. “SPYRUS products are quickly integrated into Microsoft Windows and Linux environments for cryptocurrency and distributed ledger applications and save costly recurring administrative and compliance cycles through auditable and cost effective enterprise control of remote and BYOD deployments. When the devices are managed by the SPYRUS Enterprise Management System, the devices can be blocked from access, unblocked, send a “kill pill” and providing extensive audit capabilities, adding additional layers of protection for blockchain and cryptocurrencies.”
