Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence (SPAN), a nonprofit human rights organization committed to ending violence against adults, youth and children, today announced the 10th anniversary of its Emergency Shelter Program at its current location.
Since 1979, SPAN’s Emergency Shelter Program has provided a safe shelter at a confidential location for survivors of domestic violence. SPAN relocated its shelter from an old renovated home that could house 12 adults and children to a 27-bed facility in 2008, increasing its capacity by more than 60 percent. The current shelter facility has provided more than 2,500 adults and 950 children with 92,802 safe overnights and hundreds of thousands of meals prepared in the facility’s communal kitchen.
“It isn’t glamorous, but maintaining a strong, sound infrastructure is critically important for a community based non-profit like us,” said Mary Pierce, SPAN’s development director. “Our shelter is a community resource, and we have a duty to our clients and the community to keep these facilities safe, sound and secure.”
SPAN welcomes all victims of abuse, including anyone silenced due to their ethnicity, race, religion, age, ability, income level, sexual orientation, or gender identity. During a stay at SPAN’s shelter, SPAN Advocates provide survivors with safety planning, counseling and advocacy support, and access to community resources, including post-shelter transitional housing. Basic needs such as food and clothing round out the day-to-day and crisis services SPAN provides.
In order to continue providing a safe place where survivors and their children can rebuild their lives in dignity, SPAN is seeking the following donations:

- $250 - Paint a counseling room at the shelter. Includes time, paint and all the tools needed.
- $500 - Adopt a bedroom. Includes carpet, window covering, nightstand and paint.
- $1000 - Improve the dining experience. New flooring, appliances, paint and chairs.
Each donor will receive an invitation to SPAN’s closing party event on Friday, Oct. 26, a personal letter from SPAN’s executive director and recognition in an advertisement in the Daily Camera as well as on SPAN’s website.
