“Patient Alert: Gluteal Fat Grafting To The Buttocks Is A High Risk Cosmetic Surgery Procedure” Warns International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS)

Recent Multiple Deaths Resulting From This Popular Cosmetic Procedure Has Prompted Creation of An Investigative Task Force of Plastic Surgeons Providing Guidance and Increasing Patient Awareness.

New York, NY, Aug. 30, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- NEW YORK, NY, Aug. 21, 2018 – Attribute it to Hollywood, the Kardashian family, or an array of other celebrities who choose to focus on the importance of having a well-formed derriere - Gluteal fat grafting is a fast growing cosmetic procedure. More commonly referred to as the Brazilian Butt Lift, Gluteal Fat Grafting grew year over year by as much as 17% globally according to the International Study of Cosmetic Procedures conducted by ISAPS in 2016. Despite its name, the BBL is not a cosmetic procedure developed in Brazil or by Brazilian surgeons and is a reference to the popular curvier shape that is sought after particularly in Latin American countries but has become more popularized by Hollywood celebrities.

So exactly how popular is Gluteal Fat Grafting to the buttocks? Over 300,000 gluteal fat grafting procedures are performed around the world each year according to the ISAPS study, with Brazil performing the largest number 77,770, followed by the USA 23,364, Mexico 30,131, Colombia 19,796, Venezuela 9509, Turkey 7,008 and India 5,680.

However, despite its popularity, Gluteal Fat Grafting has resulted in a rate of death significantly higher than any other cosmetic surgery procedure, estimated to be 1 death for every 3,000 surgeries performed.

“Over the past three years, in particular, we have seen both a rise in the popularity of gluteal fat grafting and most concerningly the number of complications sometimes resulting in death caused by this procedure”, says Dr. Renato Saltz, President of ISAPS. “This is a complex surgery and when a surgeon without the proper training or knowledge performs it, the results can be catastrophic.”

In response to these unusually high figures, ISAPS has joined forces with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), International Society of Plastic Regenerative Surgeons and the International Federation for Adipose Therapeutics and Science. Together they have formed an industry first investigative Task Force for Safety in Gluteal Fat Grafting. The goal of the Task Force is to understand why this procedure has a considerably higher risk associated with it and to develop specific safety guidelines to increase patient safety.   Comprised of Board-certified plastic surgeons from all over the world, the task-force is presenting a special session at the ISAPS Congress in Miami that will be attended by over 2000 plastic surgeons October 31-November 4th 2018.

“The higher risks associated with Gluteal Fat Grafting are of a huge concern to us all and we urge patients who are considering having this procedure to very carefully research the training and credentials performing this specific procedure, Says Dr. Renato Saltz. “As with any cosmetic surgery, we recommend patients choose a board-certified plastic surgeon who possesses the highest levels of aesthetic training and has extensive experience performing this surgery. We encourage all patients to talk to their surgeon at length about the associated risks involved with Gluteal Fat Grafting before making their decision to have the procedure.“
