Jupiter Appoints John Englander as Advisor

Englander Brings 20+ Years of Oceanographic and Risk Mitigation Experience

SAN MATEO, Calif., Sept. 17, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Jupiter (www.jupiterintel.com), the leading provider of predictive data and analytics to manage climate-related risk, announced today the appointment of oceanographer John Englander as a Senior Advisor. With the publication of his book, High Tide On Main Street: Rising Sea Level and the Coming Coastal Crisis in 2012, Englander established himself as a global expert on climate change. Military leaders, senior corporate executives, and various professional organizations all rely on Englander’s hard-hitting, plain language explanation of what to expect as the ice caps melt and the sea rises.  He will continue in his role as President and Founder of the International Sea Level Institute, a nonprofit think tank and policy center.

“I’m excited and honored to be joining Jupiter in their valuable, pioneering work,” Englander said. “The consequences of climate change touch every part of a community, from business continuity to resource protection, to municipal infrastructure, to property valuation and public safety. Decade by decade, the high water mark will continue to reach higher and higher levels. With their technology and innovative approach, Jupiter is playing an essential role in helping communities and organizations prepare for what has already occurred and on the horizon.”

Rich Sorkin, CEO of Jupiter, said that the addition of Englander to Jupiter’s outstanding group of advisors would further strengthen Jupiter’s deep bench of risk expertise. “John has decades of experience discussing the impact of sea level rise with local communities, asset owners, insurers, investors and the national security community,” Sorkin said. “Long-term risk to coastal infrastructure will present formidable challenges, but also new business opportunities. John’s unique insight, his personal experience in the Arctic and Antarctica, and ability to communicate the long trajectory of rising sea level as a flood risk multiplier compliments Jupiter’s strategic vision extremely well.”

Englander’s fascination with sea level began more than forty years ago, when he discovered ancient beaches, now two hundred feet below the surface, and dated them to just 15,000 years ago. That tied in with the natural cycles of the ice ages and fluctuations in sea level. His focus came back to sea level and climate change in 1997, after long discussions with the legendary Jacques Cousteau. They saw climate change, the oceans, and the rising sea level as a new message for the ocean planet. Cousteau hired Englander as CEO but sadly died just a few months later, before their plans could be put into effect.

Englander will join other public and private sector experts on Jupiter’s advisory board, which includes both climate scientists and industry leaders.
