Norfolk, Va., Oct. 10, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Old Dominion University is celebrating the expansion of the School of Nursing programs and the establishment of a new Center for Telehealth Education and Research at the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 10 a.m.
Old Dominion has maintained a presence in Virginia Beach for 30 years. Its Higher Education Center is adjacent to Tidewater Community College.
The move will complement ODU's health-sciences presence in Norfolk, introducing high-demand graduate programs in Virginia Beach, such as telehealth. It also will enlarge other programs in the Schools of Nursing and Community & Environmental Health within the College of Health Sciences. The expansion will bring an additional 850 students and 62 faculty members to Virginia Beach.

The event will include remarks from Old Dominion President John R. Broderick; Karen Karlowicz, associate professor and chair of the School of Nursing; Austin Agho, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs; Gov. Ralph Northam; and Virginia Beach Mayor Louis R. Jones.

In fall of 2018, the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center started offering upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in nursing and telehealth training, providing students dynamic new classroom and hands-on opportunities in these critical fields. This includes a day-long interprofessional telehealth seminar offered multiple times during the academic year and involves graduate students from ODU, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Hampton University and Virginia Wesleyan University.

In addition to a new telehealth center, the University later plans to launch a primary-care clinic and a substance-abuse prevention center, along with a phase II expansion of its simulation training facilities.
