Verizon and Calix achieved speeds of 8 Gbps using NGPON2 technology

By deploying this technology, customers will experience multi-gigabit speeds

TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 30, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Customers nationwide can look forward to even greater bandwidth speeds and lower latency when accessing Verizon internet connections. Recently, Verizon and Calix, a global provider of cloud and software platforms, systems, and services used in next generation access networks, achieved consistent, symmetrical customer usable throughputs of 8 Gigabits per second on Verizon’s live network in Tampa, FL using NGPON2 technology on Calix’s AXOS® platform

To meet ever increasing subscriber demand for greater bandwidth and lower latency, Verizon is deploying a network architecture that will support a dramatic improvement in network performance and accelerate the delivery of new service offerings using NGPON2 standards. NGPON2 (Next-Generation Passive Optical Network 2) is the newest standard for Passive Optical Networks (fiber networks that don’t require active amplification over long distances due to signal loss).

NGPON2 standards upgrade the hardware and software in the Optical Line Terminals (OLT) at the end of fiber cables to provide faster speeds, lower latency, simplification of operations and increased automation in the fiber network.

“The speed and latency gains provided by integrating NGPON2 standards into our fiber network are only some of the benefits this cutting edge technology will provide,” said Lee Hicks, Vice President of Technology Development and Planning for Verizon.  “This new technology will also provide a greater degree of automation in our fiber network which will help us speed deployment of services to our customers, and will introduce a greater level of interoperability among network components which will lead to greater efficiencies.”

The recent demonstration in Florida included the AXOS Routing Protocol module (RPm) for Layer 3 and the AXOS Subscriber Management module (SMm) as well as the E9-2 Intelligent Edge System.

“The Calix AXOS Intelligent Access Edge Solution collapses the functions of subscriber management, aggregation and OLT into a single system, enabling service providers to move fast by automating and dramatically simplifying operations in their network,” said Michel Langlois, chief development officer from Calix. “In the face of ever-increasing subscriber demand, a simplified network is vital to delivering next-generation services.”

“We continue to work with innovators across the industry to move the industry forward and push towards widespread deployment of these NGPON2 standards,” said Hicks.  “This demonstration is another great step in providing the best available technology to our customers, which our customers have come to expect from Verizon.”
