High Concrete Group Recognized in Global Competition

The dramatic, curved architectural facade of 1200 Intrepid takes first place in ACI Excellence Awards

Denver, Pa., Nov. 01, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The American Concrete Institute (ACI) recognized Denver, Pa.-based High Concrete Group LLC at its annual ACI Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards. The precast company produced the innovative architectural precast concrete system for 1200 Intrepid, the office building that claimed the top prize in the Mid-Rise Buildings category.

1200 Intrepid won against an impressive group of 13 other outstanding entrants from the U.S., France, Canada, and Qatar. The award was presented at the ACI’s 2018 Awards Gala in Las Vegas, https://youtu.be/tjeEoFjj--U.

First Place, Mid-Rise Buildings: 1200 Intrepid in the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Philadelphia. Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group’s (BIG) New York office, the curved, load-bearing architectural façade for this four-story, 92,000-square-foot building presents a complex, sloped profile on its eastern flank reminiscent of the bow of a ship intended to evoke the maritime heritage of the project site in addition to reflecting the circular geometry of the adjacent park. The $35 million building’s tilted eastern elevation, where the radius goes from 320 ft. (97.5 m) at grade to over 8,920 ft. (2,720 m) at the roofline, was achieved by assembling flat, traditional architectural precast concrete panels to form a complex faceted geometry.

“We’re humbled by this honor,” said Bob Pabst, vice president of sales and marketing for High, “and we’re delighted to have worked with BIG. They have an extraordinary vision for what can be accomplished with architectural precast concrete, and making 1200 Intrepid a reality was both a challenge and a dream come true.”

Describing the project, Corina-Maria Aldea Ph.D. P.Eng. FACI, who was one of seven esteemed Award Jurors from industry said, “The structure is definitely a great example for the use of special concrete materials—the white self-consolidating concrete used for the precast panels not only provides structural integrity and flexibility of design, but also a sustainable solution in terms of material selection, which results in very high aesthetic quality.” All entries had qualified by earning recognition in regional ACI chapter competitions. Judges based their decisions on each project’s architectural and engineering merit, creativity, innovative construction techniques or solutions, innovative use of materials, ingenuity, sustainability and resilience, and functionality.

The structural engineer was Environetics; the general contractor was Turner Construction Company; and the developer was Liberty Property Trust and the Philadelphia Development Corporation, all of Philadelphia.

Previously, the 1200 Intrepid project received the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) 2017 Harry H. Edwards Industry Advancement Award and the 2016 Louis I. Kahn Memorial Award from the Philadelphia Center for Architecture and Design.
