EIM: Gylfi to step down as CEO at year end

The Board of Directors of Eimskip and the CEO Gylfi Sigfússon have agreed that Gylfi will step down as the CEO of the company at the end of the year. As of 1 January 2019 Gylfi will manage Eimskip’s operation in USA and Canada, along with the freight forwarding company Eimskip Logistics. The Board of Directors of the company will start the process of hiring a new CEO.

Baldvin Þorsteinsson, Chairman of Eimskip

“Gylfi Sigfússon has had a successful career at Eimskip for over 28 years. He became the CEO in May 2008 and lead the company through a demanding restructuring. Prior to becoming the CEO he was the managing director of Eimskip USA, Canada and Eimskip Logistics, and as of 1 January 2019 he will again manage that operation and move to United States.

Gylfi became the CEO ten years ago and lead Eimskip through a financial and operational restructuring during the economic downturn post 2008. The task was not only important for Eimskip but also for the Icelandic economy: securing unrestricted transportation to and from the country, building a solid foundation for the future alongside hardworking and dedicated team of coworkers. The restructuring was a success and the company is in a very strong position. The goal is to continue to build the company on the solid foundation Gylfi has built. On behalf of the Board of Directors I want to thank him for his contribution to the Company and wish him all the best leading the operation in North America.”

Gylfi Sigfússon, CEO of Eimskip

“First and foremost I would like to thank all the board members, managing directors and employees as well as our customers that I was fortunate enough to work with during my time as CEO. All of them made valuable contribution to get Eimskip back on track. The reorganization of the Company was a big challenge for the employees but the results were fruitful and now the Company is heading into exciting future. I will lead further progression of the company in North America, but our weekly sailing system is the cornerstone of the service. I wish the Company, the Board of Directors, employees and our customers all the best in the future.”
