Granddaughter Launches Barry & Peggy Goldwater Foundation to Preserve Senator Barry M. Goldwater’s 15,000 Photographs and Motion Picture Film for Future Generations

“I’m trying to record the history of my state so that students 25, 50 or 100 years from now…if they are interested in Indians they can see my photographs of them the way they were.” Senator Barry M. Goldwater

PHOENIX, Dec. 11, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Senator Barry M. Goldwater’s granddaughter, Alison Goldwater Ross, launches the Barry & Peggy Goldwater Foundation to curate, restore and preserve her grandfather’s work through digitizing over 15,000 negatives and 25 miles of motion picture film taken by the late Senator dating back to the 1930s made possible through funding from premier sponsor Salt River Project (SRP) and media partner Arizona Highways.

“The commitment of the Foundation is to preserve these historic and important images for generations to come through exhibitions, learning platforms and the forthcoming Goldwater Virtual Library,” stated Executive Director Alison Goldwater Ross. “I am fulfilling his wishes by sharing images of the landscapes, native peoples, and places that he captured throughout his life.” (In Barry’s own words: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcG6U0ceRDM)

“SRP recognizes the importance of preserving Arizona’s rich past and educating the public on aspects of our state’s history,” said SRP President David Rousseau. “The Barry Goldwater photographic collection is one of a kind and can provide both still photos and film that feature Arizona’s early landscapes and the people who have helped shape our state’s identity.”

Goldwater Ross has curated the exhibition, Photographs by Barry M Goldwater: The Arizona Highways Collection presented by SRP at the Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West. The exhibition will feature the largest collection of Goldwater photographs of Arizona’s native people and landscapes and include intimate family photos and personal items. The exhibition runs January 6 – June 23, 2019 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
