No Kid Hungry Launches National Powered by Breakfast Campaign to Raise Awareness of the Importance of Breakfast for Kids

No Kid Hungry Challenges Perception of Childhood Hunger Across the U.S. with New Study

WASHINGTON, March 06, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- No Kid Hungry, a national campaign to end childhood hunger in America, has released new data highlighting the perception of childhood hunger in local neighborhoods and schools across America in support of the organization’s “Powered by Breakfast” campaign.

Powered by Breakfast is a signature platform developed by No Kid Hungry to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of breakfast for kids.

To kick-off National School Breakfast Week (March 4-8), No Kid Hungry surveyed more than 2,000 Americans to explore public perception of the childhood hunger crisis alongside the stark reality of children going to school hungry in classrooms across the country.

Breakfast powers kids of all ages to reach their full potential. But with 1 in 6 kids in America living with hunger, too many aren’t getting the fuel they need.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) 13 million children are living with hunger across the country -- from affluent suburbs to rural areas -- yet 93%1 of Americans surveyed don’t believe they know children in their neighborhood who go to school hungry.

“We may all agree that no child should go hungry in America, but our research shows there’s a sobering disconnect between how adults perceive the issue in their own communities, and the reality that faces kids every day.” said Jill Davis, Senior Vice President of Corporate Partnerships at No Kid Hungry.

According to Betty Crocker, director of child nutrition services at Redlands Unified School District in California, the problem is far more widespread -- and frequent -- than Americans believe.

Three in four teachers across America see students who regularly come to school hungry because they are not getting enough to eat at home, and for nearly half of these kids, it’s a daily occurrence,” said Crocker.

“We can clearly see the impact of breakfast programming in our district -- kids who start their day with a nutritious meal have the energy they need to think big and are less likely to struggle in school.”

Celebrating National School Breakfast Week, No Kid Hungry hosted a Pedal to Power School Breakfast pop-up event at the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles on Tuesday, March 5th, to celebrate the importance of breakfast in a fun and interactive way.

No Kid Hungry is proud to work with Kellogg’s, Citi, Amazon, General Mills and other partners to make sure kids are #PoweredbyBreakfast every day.
