New Report Shows Biggest Career Roadblocks Women Experience, What Advice They Would Give Their Younger Selves

Research from New Non-Profit, Women in Revenue, on the Challenges for Women in Sales and Marketing

SAN FRANCISCO, March 21, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Women in Revenue, a new non-profit dedicated to empowering women in sales and marketing careers, unveiled a report today about the top challenges facing women in those roles. Based on a survey of more than 100 women in revenue positions, the research also reveals the biggest career roadblocks women experience, what work benefits are most important to them, and what advice they would give their younger selves. Women in Revenue was founded by female sales and marketing leaders to advance the careers of women in revenue positions. The founding board members include sales and marketing leaders from Adobe, Annuitas Group, CS2 Marketing, Egnyte, Greenfig, InsideView, Invoca, Nokia, Radius, and Sprinkler, brought together by Shari Johnston, co-founder and principal of Digby SF, who conceived the original idea and recruited the board members.

“Research from organizations like Bloomberg, HBR, McKinsey, and others shows that gender diversity leads to better business performance,” said Women in Revenue founder Shari Johnston. ”The purpose of this research was to empower companies with information about how to attract and retain top female talent, as well as empowering women with advice from their peers.”

The survey found that the top three challenges women experience in their careers are work/life balance, a lack of mentorship, and getting an equal seat at the table. Women also reported that work benefits most important to them include flexible work hours, the option to work from home, and direct access to decision-makers.

In addition, the survey asked what advice women would give to their younger selves. The responses fell into three primary categories. The first concerned confidence, with women advising their peers to take risks and be outspoken. One respondent said, “Remain confident and believe in your voice. Don’t be put down in the workplace. Rise above.” Mentors were the clear focus in the second category of responses, with respondents recommending that women in revenue find a mentor and/or sponsor who is invested in their career as early as possible. Finally, the third largest category of responses offered advice for networking, understanding revenue contribution, and various other areas of career life. One respondent gave this sage advice that is particularly important for women in revenue—“Wherever possible, find out/quantify how your work contributes to revenue.”

Research was conducted late last year by Women in Revenue, a non-profit organization founded in 2018. The organization is comprised of leaders and up-and-coming managers in sales, marketing, and other revenue-impacting roles.

”Our goal is to both provide education around diversity in the workplace and give back to women through mentorship programs, opportunities, and access to resources,” said Johnston. “This report is meant to start a conversation about what organizations can do to enable women in leadership roles to succeed and how they can advance their careers.”

InsideView conducted a webinar with Women in Revenue including these findings on March 12. Panelists on the webinar included Laura Ramos, vice president, principal analyst, Forrester Research; Amanda Kahlow, founder and Chief Strategy Officer, 6sense; Nate Skinner, vice president, product marketing, salesforce; and Tracy Eiler, CMO of InsideView and founding member of Women in Revenue. A recording of the webinar can be found at this link.

Women in Revenue will continue to conduct research and release annual updates on this data.  Download a copy of this year’s report here.
