OEA Comments on Ontario Government’s Energy Sector Reforms

TORONTO, March 21, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The OEA wishes to congratulate the government for moving ahead with reforming the governance structure and accountability framework of the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) as recommended by the OEB Modernization Review Panel. The OEA looks forward to working with the provincial government in implementing its vision for the sector.

“The OEA commends the provincial government for taking action to modernize Ontario’s energy regulator,” said Vince Brescia, President & CEO of the OEA. “The improved governance structure proposed for the Ontario Energy Board will help instill investor confidence and therefore promote innovation and job creation in a sector going through a technological transformation,” said Brescia.  “The OEA proposed many of these reforms in its submissions to the OEB Modernization Panel and is pleased to see the provincial government being responsive to suggestions coming from the sector.”

With respect to the conservation reforms, the OEA recognizes the government’s objectives to remove costs from Ontario’s electricity system. Looking ahead, the OEA believes that conservation will be an important low cost resource for Ontario’s energy system in the future. “We look forward to working with the provincial government, the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) and the Ontario Energy Board to develop a long term strategy for conservation that ensures electricity customers can benefit from this low cost alternative to other resources,” said Brescia.
