Sunrun CEO Issues Call To Energy Industry: Innovate and Decarbonize

New report details how home solar and battery systems are building a renewable, responsive and resilient energy system

SAN FRANCISCO, March 25, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Speaking at the BNEF Summit in New York City, Sunrun’s Chief Executive, Lynn Jurich, today called upon energy industry leaders to take bold action to rapidly decarbonize the electric system, empower people to generate clean energy, and quickly scale deployment of local renewable technologies.

“Our current energy system was built more than 100 years ago and was not designed for today's energy consumers, technology or climate,” said Lynn Jurich, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer at Sunrun. “Americans are demanding clean, renewable energy and we have the technology today to decarbonize our electricity system. The energy industry must take bold action to embrace renewable energy and evolve to put people first.”

In a new report, We Can Decarbonize Rapidly: How Consumers Are Making It Happen, Sunrun details how home solar and battery systems can help create a cleaner, more resilient and affordable energy system. The report demonstrates how these energy resources can replace gas-fired power plants, rebuild the energy system in Puerto Rico, and mitigate wildfire risk in California and other wildfire-prone communities.

Sunrun’s analysis includes recommendations for evolving the current utility business model, maximizing the value of batteries, cutting permitting red tape, and expanding access to solar energy in vulnerable communities impacted by climate change and pollution.

“We should boldly scale local energy resources and prove how they can complement and streamline existing centralized power plants and the transmission system. This will help us develop a resilient and decarbonized energy system on a timeline that supports a prosperous and sustainable future,” said Lynn Jurich.

The report further details what it means to build a consumer-centered energy system, and how on-the-ground innovation is key to success: “We are on a learning curve with distributed solar, batteries and other consumer-centered energy resources. We need to continue to encourage more adoption so we can prototype with how to share these resources and deliver services to the grid,” writes Jurich.
