NACD President And CEO Peter Gleason To Chair Global Network Of Director Institutes

Gleason Will Lead Collaboration Between Director Organizations in 21 Countries on Critical Governance Issues

WASHINGTON, March 29, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), the authority on boardroom practices representing more than 20,000 board members, today announced that Peter R. Gleason, president and CEO, has been appointed chair of the Global Network of Director Institutes (GNDI), an international network which fosters cooperation between the preeminent directorship organizations in 21 countries around the world. The network represents more than 130,000 directors and governance professionals from around the world, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, the Gulf States, Hong Kong SAR, Russia, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and more.

As chair, Gleason aims to deepen collaboration within the GNDI network, including more frequent knowledge-sharing between its member institutes on advancing director development, and a focus on new thought leadership that addresses global governance challenges. Priority issues in the next few years will include board oversight of corporate culture, board engagement with climate-change risk, and cybersecurity.

“I’m honored to be chairing a forum that brings together the leading director and governance organizations from around the world,” said Gleason. “By collaborating on cutting-edge ideas and sharing learnings, we can equip the director community to lead with confidence.”

Gleason succeeds Angela Cherrington, CEO of the Institute of Directors of Southern Africa (IoDSA), as GNDI chair.

“Peter takes the helm of GNDI at a time of growth for our network,” said Cherrington. “His experience and expertise leading the preeminent director forum in the United States will help advance GNDI’s vision and enhance our position as a respected voice in global debates.”

Since its inception in 2011, GNDI has made important contributions to global discussions around boardroom diversity, audit quality, and shareholder communications. In September of last year, they issued the first GNDI Global Director Survey, which polled more than 2,100 directors in 17 countries, revealing that poverty, income equality, taxation, government spending, and the cost of health care were the most pressing social and economic issues weighing on the minds of directors worldwide.

With Gleason serving as GNDI’s chair, Friso van der Oord, NACD’s director of research, will now represent NACD on the GNDI policy committee and will oversee the next global survey of board practices in 2020.
