Tech CU Community Relations 2018: Exceeded Prior-Year Growth

Increased Monetary Donations by 34% from 2017

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 02, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Tech CU (Technology Credit Union) announced today that its 2018 Community Relations program had its best year yet. In 2018, Tech CU, along with its employees and members, contributed more than $255,000 (a 34% increase from 2017) in monetary donations. The company also donated more than 400 volunteer hours, 340 school backpacks/school supplies for low income families and students, and more than 35,000 meals (a 42% increase from last year) to Second Harvest Food Bank.

“At Tech CU, we believe we have a responsibility to help improve the health and wellbeing of the communities we serve. We do this by partnering with great organizations and donating both time and money,” said Todd Harris, CEO of Tech CU. “We even have a VTO (volunteer time off) program where employees can take a day fully paid to volunteer at their favorite organization. And, if they use all of their VTO hours during the year, we will make a donation to the charity of their choice.”

“The Bay Area ranks as one of the world’s most affluent areas, yet because of the extreme high cost of living in the Bay Area more than 800,000 residents are living at or below the poverty line,” said Janikke Klem, Vice President of Community Relations at Tech CU. “This means that many in our community can’t afford food. Hungry kids often struggle at school. Families who have trouble putting food on the table also can’t afford basic school supplies or a backpack. Education is the best tool to eliminate poverty. This is why much of our effort is focused on equipping underprivileged and vulnerable children with the tools needed to succeed at school.”

Since 2007, Tech CU has invested more than $2 million in Bay Area communities. This money goes towards supporting local organizations in STEM education (science, technology, engineering and math), workforce development, financial literacy, affordable housing, and health and wellness. These organizations include but are not limited to: Breakthrough Silicon Valley, Family Giving Tree, SVLG Foundation, Morgan Autism Center, The Tech Museum of Innovation, Downtown Streets Team, and San Jose State University. Tech CU is also the only credit union participating in the Housing Trust Silicon Valley’s Affordable Housing Fund, which supports affordable housing developers in land acquisition and construction.

Tech CU’s executive team members also sits on a variety of community boards, including the Housing Trust Silicon Valley, Joint Venture Silicon Valley, San Jose Museum of Art and the Silicon Valley Leadership Group Foundation.
