“The medtech industry is constantly evolving as it welcomes new technologies and innovative designs,” said Amy Sklar, Group Senior Vice President, Advanced Manufacturing Communities, UBM. “This year the Medtech Hub will offer attendees intimate exposure to some of the most exciting technologies emerging in the field, such artificial intelligence (AI) and next-generation sensors that will ultimately transform the way patients receive treatment.”

This year’s MD&M East agenda encompasses a range of panels, sessions, and hands-on demos for attendees to explore an end-to-end medtech showcase covering the latest technologies and solutions, including biocompatible materials, components, assembly, contract manufacturing, and more.

Featured sessions, panels and demos taking place at the MD&M East Medtech Hub include:

Tuesday, June 11
Panel: Choosing the Right Plastic for Your Medical Device (12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m., Booth 1669)
Selecting the best plastics for use in your medical device is key to optimizing your design for manufacturing, assembly, packaging, sterilization, and testing. Depending on the application and classification of a medical device and its accessories, the use of the right plastic will make all the difference. In this session, moderator Michael Paloian, of Integrated Design Systems Inc., will lead a discussion on the important factors to consider, so you can make the right choice for your device.

Panel: Award-Worthy Medtech Design on a Dime (1:00 p.m. – 1:45 p.m., Booth 1669)
The need to cut cost and the demand for great design are two competing trends in the healthcare arena. To show how medtech companies can satisfy both, this session will host designers and engineers of Medical Design Excellence Awards finalist product—including representatives from Dexcom and DePuy Synthes—who will share their tips on how to adhere to cost constraints while still putting out a prize-worthy product design.

Wednesday, June 12
Panel: Meet Medtech's AI Pioneers (12:00 p.m. - 12:45 p.m., Booth 1669)
Healthcare is perhaps the area in which artificial intelligence (AI) stands to benefit humanity the most. In this session, you'll hear from companies like Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices and Behold.ai that are pioneering the use of AI in medtech and learn why companies should consider how to make their next device either incorporate or play nice with the technology.

How Are Your Device Classification Skills? Hands-On Practice That Will Improve Your Expertise (3:00 p.m. - 3:45 p.m., Booth 1669)
Biocompatibility is a key component of many devices today, due to the nature of their use and contact with the body. In this interactive activity, led by Nelson Laboratories ISO10993 expert Thor Rollins, attendees will practice categorizing devices through a hands-on sample preparation discussion to see how their skills match up to FDA's requirements.

Thursday, June 13
Panel: Drugs and Devices: A Match Made in Healthcare Heaven (12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m., Booth 1669)
A drug is a drug—that is, until it's paired with a device and it becomes a combination product. In this session, you'll hear how pharmaceutical companies have embraced medtech to give them an edge over the competition and learn about the challenges they faced in the process. In this panel, speakers from AstraZeneca, West Pharmaceutical, and Insight PD will cover the business decisions, design challenges, and regulatory hurdles companies face when they combine drugs and devices.

Demo: More than IoT...Building a Connected Experience (1:00 p.m. – 1:45 p.m., Booth 1669)
Products at the intersection of physical and digital worlds are more than the sum of their parts, and because of the wicked complexity of integrated/connected products and services, it has become necessary to rethink the process for developing these devices. In this demo, attendees will learn that they can no longer expect hardware and software teams working in silos to produce comprehensive, cohesive, and engaging device experiences.
