OTTAWA, April 15, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Ottawa shoppers want a ban on single-use plastics. This was the finding of a recent survey conducted by terra20, an Ottawa-based retailer that curates products to help conscious consumers buy healthier and more sustainable products. When asked what they thought about single-use plastics, ninety-three percent of respondents were in favour of supporting a ban on these plastics in order to reduce waste.
Other findings showed that
- 56% of respondents were unaware that 70% of waste produced in Ontario ends up in landfills
- 95% of respondents demand better education on what is and is not recyclable in the City of Ottawa’s Blue Bin program.
The survey was conducted in response to the provincial government’s call for feedback on how to tackle Ontario’s waste problem.
“It was evident in their responses that Ottawa residents are frustrated by the amount of garbage going to landfill and specifically, how much of the Blue Bin is ending up in landfill,” said terra20 President and Co-founder Bill Stewart. “We know that many people who shop at terra20 are environmentally conscious, but the numbers and comments we got were quite telling. People want change.”
The survey was launched to a base of over 30,000 conscious consumers on March 26, 2019. The company plans to present its findings to the Minister of the Environment for the Ford government to review on April 19th, 2019.
