ATLANTA, April 25, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta (the Bank) today released preliminary unaudited financial highlights for the quarter ended March 31, 2019. All numbers reported below for the first quarter of 2019 are approximate until the Bank announces unaudited financial results in its Form 10-Q filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which is expected to be filed on or about May 9, 2019.

The Bank reported net income of $101 million for the first quarter of 2019, a decrease of $13 million from net income of $114 million for the first quarter of 2018. The decrease in net income for the first quarter is primarily due to changes in interest rates during the period.

As of March 31, 2019, the Bank had total assets of $138.9 billion, a decrease of $15.5 billion, or 10.06 percent, from December 31, 2018. The Bank's advances were $90.9 billion as of March 31, 2019, a decrease of $17.5 billion, or 16.17 percent, from December 31, 2018. The Bank's retained earnings balance was $2.1 billion as of March 31, 2019, an increase of $16 million, or 0.73 percent, from December 31, 2018. Capital stock was $4.8 billion as of March 31, 2019, a decrease of $733 million, or 13.35 percent, from December 31, 2018.

The Bank's first quarter 2019 performance resulted in an annualized return on average equity (ROE) of 5.72 percent as compared to 6.01 percent for the first quarter of 2018. The ROE spread to average three-month LIBOR decreased to 303 basis points for the first quarter of 2019, as compared to 408 basis points for the first quarter of 2018. As of March 31, 2019, the Bank was in compliance with its regulatory capital requirements.
