Sci-Tech Discovery Center Launches Finisar Mobile Laser Lab on May 18

Finisar Mobile Laser Lab to debut with a day of optics-themed STEM fun and discounted museum admission for the public

FRISCO, Texas, April 29, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Sci-Tech Discovery Center, Frisco’s leading family-friendly cultural and educational destination, will officially launch its new Finisar Mobile Laser Lab with a public event at the center on Saturday, May 18. At the launch, museumgoers will be able to experiment with several optics-themed demonstrations throughout the day. The museum will offer discounted admission, courtesy of the Finisar Mobile Laser Lab. The lab debuts during the week celebrating the UNESCO International Day of Light.

The Finisar Mobile Laser Lab includes three interactive traveling exhibits to be used at public-outreach events and school-based events.  Designed for a young audience, each component includes hands-on experiences in important STEM-based topics, including:

Geometric Optics: “Refract Upon This” -- A laser beam and acrylic prisms reflect the excitement of science and technology. Students can experience how they can affect the behavior of light using lasers.

Optical Lenses: “Flip Your Focus” -- Students can use an optical bench tool to vary the focal length of different lenses to experience how they can affect light as it travels.

Fiber Optics: “Bending Light” -- From data transmission to interior design, fiber optic technology is a part of our everyday lives.  Students can experiment with real world applications of this technology and learn how light travels for video communications.

The Finisar Mobile Laser Lab will serve as a hands-on introduction to lasers and optical components for students in grades 6 through 12. Lab programming is designed to build on classroom learning and allow this group to experiment with light to gain first-hand experiences.

“Finisar is excited to join forces with Sci-Tech to bring STEM programming to students across the North Texas and Sherman areas,” explains Jeff Brown, Vice President and General Manager of Texas Operations, Finisar. “As a world leader in 3D VCSEL Sensing technology, Finisar is dedicated to helping students foster an interest in scientific studies though these hands-on experiences.”
