NSF International Honors Joe Corby With 2019 Food Safety Leadership Award

Annual awards program recognizes innovation and outstanding achievements in food safety

ANN ARBOR, Mich., May 09, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- NSF International, a global public health and safety organization, announced Joe Corby, Senior Advisor to the Association of Food & Drug Officials, as this year’s recipient of the prestigious Food Safety Leadership Award at the 2019 Food Safety Summit.

Each year, NSF International’s Food Safety Leadership Award recognizes individuals and organizations for real and lasting improvements in food safety. Nominations are evaluated by the Food Safety Summit Educational Advisory Board (EAB), which is a volunteer group made up of industry leaders representing manufacturing, foodservice, regulatory, academia, retail and distribution. Award winners are then selected by NSF International.

This year’s Food Safety Leadership Award for Innovation and Achievement recognizes Joe Corby for his lifelong dedication to advancing food safety. “During his 47-year career in food safety regulation, Joe made significant contributions to the food industry by his willingness to reach across the aisle and collaborate with industry, academia and consumer groups,” said Kevan P. Lawlor, President and Chief Executive Officer of NSF International. “He has been an outspoken advocate for the advancement of a nationally integrated food safety system and continues to work with numerous groups and associations in support of this cause.”

Corby began his career at the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, where he worked for 37 years. There, he served as the Director of the Division of Food Safety and Inspection before leaving in 2008. He then served as the Executive Director for the Association of Food & Drug Officials (AFDO) before retiring in 2018. He is a past recipient of the Harvey W. Wiley Award, AFDO’s most prestigious award that honors members for their exceptional service in the enforcement of food and drug law.

He currently is a Senior Advisor for AFDO, and serves on the Education Advisory Board for the Food Safety Summit and on the Board of Directors for the International Food Protection Training Institute and the Partnership for Food Safety Education.

Corby is an instructor for the International Food Protection Training Institute, the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) and the University of Tennessee. “Through the years, Joe has mentored and taught hundreds of food safety professionals. His example is sure to make a lasting impact on the future of food safety,” Lawlor adds.
