The Apache® Software Foundation Announces New Top-Level Projects

Introducing Apache Auron™, Apache Reqsign™, and Apache ResilientDB™

Wilmington, DE, Oct. 14, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), the global home for open source software the world relies on, today announced that Apache Auron, Apache Reqsign, and Apache ResilientDB have become Top-Level Projects (TLPs). Apache Auron and Apache ResilientDB graduated from the Apache Incubator, and Apache Reqsign was established as a standalone project after maturing as a subproject of Apache OpenDAL™.

Apache Auron is an open source accelerator for big data query engines, powered by native vectorized execution. Auron has completed integrations with compute engines including Apache Spark™ and Apache Flink®, as well as open source lakehouse formats Apache Paimon™, Apache Iceberg™, and Apache Hudi™. Auron has passed all TPC‑DS/TPC‑H benchmark cases. Compared to Apache Spark 3.5, Auron runs two times faster and saves an average of 50% of cluster resources.

"Since Auron entered the ASF Incubator, it has drawn tremendous attention from the community, demonstrating the ASF’s strengths as an open, vibrant, and highly autonomous community," said Wang Jing, original creator of Apache Auron. "We look forward to jointly advancing the development of foundational technologies for the data and AI ecosystem together with the community."

Apache Reqsign signs HTTP requests to cloud services without requiring heavy vendor SDKs, bringing request authentication back to a simple workflow: build, sign, send. Written in Rust with minimal dependencies and tested against official SDKs and services, Reqsign supports AWS (SigV4 and multi-region SigV4a), Azure Storage, Google Cloud, Aliyun OSS, Huawei Cloud OBS, Oracle Cloud, and Tencent COS. Default signers work out of the box by loading credentials from environment variables, configuration files, or IAM roles, while every component can be customized.

“Reqsign is already used by projects such as Apache OpenDAL, uv, and Lance to handle cloud authentication. That adoption across data infrastructure and developer tools shows the value of maintaining this shared foundation together,” said Zili Chen, PMC Chair, Apache Reqsign. “As an ASF Top-Level Project, we want to make Reqsign a dependable component that more projects can build on, and bring more of those communities into its development and long-term maintenance.”

Apache ResilientDB is an open source, modular, permissioned blockchain framework built on Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus. Its distributed ledger stays consistent and available even when some nodes fail or act maliciously. To sustain high throughput, ResilientDB applies parallelism and deep pipelining at every layer of its multi-threaded architecture and decouples transaction ordering from execution. Its ecosystem also includes ResAI, an AI-assisted tool suite featuring Beacon for exploring documentation and source code, Nexus for navigating research and consensus protocols, and ContractForge for generating and deploying smart contracts.

“Becoming an ASF Top-Level Project marks a milestone eight years in the making. ResilientDB began in 2018 as a research project at the University of California, Davis, entered the Apache Incubator in 2023, and graduated in September 2026. This achievement belongs to the students, contributors, and community members who have shared their ideas, code, and time with the project, and to the mentors who guided us through incubation. Our vision is to make resilient, decentralized computing accessible to developers and researchers everywhere. We welcome everyone who wants to help shape that future as part of the ResilientDB community,” said Mohammad Sadoghi, PMC Chair, Apache ResilientDB.

About the Apache Incubator
Open source projects need healthy communities to thrive. The Apache Incubator is the entry path into the ASF, hosting incoming projects (called podlings) and providing them with services and mentorship to help them build resilient, durable communities and adopt The Apache Way. When a podling has demonstrated an active, diverse contributor base and a track record of independent, consensus-driven governance, it graduates from the Incubator to become a Top-Level Project.

About the Apache Software Foundation
The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), established in 1999, is the global home for open source software, stewarding hundreds of projects that underpin critical systems in every industry. As a 501(c)(3) charity governed by individual members, not corporations, the ASF ensures its software remains vendor-neutral and developed for the public good. The ASF's community-led model, "The Apache Way," has shaped how open source is built worldwide. Learn more at https://apache.org.

The ASF’s annual Community Over Code event is where open source technologists convene to share best practices and use cases, forge critical relationships, and learn about advancements in their field: https://communityovercode.org/.
