ANN ARBOR, Mich., Oct. 14, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The National Center for Manufacturing Sciences (NCMS) has released a white paper that highlights the numerous initiatives it oversees that have resulted in rapid advances in the capabilities, performance, and impact of additive manufacturing (AM). Through exploring several recent technology innovation projects, the paper establishes how NCMS is supporting the technical foundation needed to transition AM from a technology useful for individual, custom-designed parts into a scalable manufacturing and supply-chain capability for the defense industrial base and the broader US manufacturing sector.
NCMS manages public-private partnerships that collaborate on technology research, development, and transition—working with government, industry and academia to find solutions for national manufacturing, technology, maintenance and sustainment challenges.
AM is one of the technology focuses for projects that NCMS assists in leading. Because of this, the company has deep insight into where there are opportunities for both the industrial base and commercial manufacturing.
“The challenge now is to move additive manufacturing from successful applications to scalable production,” said NCMS Chief Technology Officer Thomas Kurfess. “NCMS is helping build the capabilities needed to make that transition.”
This report also features seven main process categories of AM technologies and recent NCMS initiatives that have shown successes and implementation. Several recent NCMS projects noted in the white paper have advanced AM processes, machines, and materials R&D that require new classifications, including cold spray AM.
NCMS collaborated with nearly 30 partners to develop the white paper by interviewing AM subject matter experts and gathering recent pertinent information across the Department of War, industry, academia, and national labs.
