Nokia on track to meet next generation targets in mobile communications


Nokia today launched two GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) phones, the high-tech Nokia 6310 and fashion first Nokia 8310 for GSM market in Europe and Asia-Pacific, as well as a world first — the Nokia MW1352, a cutting-edge DSL connectivity gateway. New GSM phones will be shown to the Asia-Pacific market at a parallel event to be held in Sydney, Australia on March 22.

Speaking at the Nokia press conference at CeBIT in Germany, Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones, expressed confidence in the company's ability to meet next generation targets in mobile communications.

"With the new products announced today, we are well on track with our stated target of continuing to strengthen our global mobile phone leadership. We believe strongly in the future, and are well positioned to take full advantage of the opportunities offered through the ongoing evolution of mobile technology," said Vanjoki, adding that, "Nokia's first 3G terminals are expected to follow the GPRS terminals with similar timing in one year's time."

Nokia renews phone range with new introductions at CeBIT and CTIA
The Nokia 8310 fashion phone, featuring a rich plethora of overlapping colors and surfaces, will be the first Nokia GPRS phone to market, and is scheduled to start shipping during the third quarter, 2001. The powerful Nokia 6310, combining enhanced Internet connectivity with GPRS, Bluetooth and SyncML technologies will follow in the fourth quarter, 2001.

Nokia also today introduced a recreative new WAP-enabled phone for the broader audience, the Nokia 3330, as well as the Nokia music player, a mobile phone accessory enabling mobile music downloads or stand alone entertainment. The Nokia 3330 is scheduled to ship in the second quarter of this year, while the music player will be available during the third quarter.

Yesterday at the CTIA Wireless trade show in Las Vegas, USA, Nokia also launched four new models for the Americas market. The Nokia 3360 and the Nokia 3320 mobile phones are designed for the TDMA standards and are equipped with WAP browsers. The Nokia 3285 and the Nokia 3280 are designed for the CDMA standards. These products are expected to be available during the second and the third quarter, 2001.

Nokia Home Communications launched two additions to its Nokia Mediamaster family; the high-end Nokia Mediamaster 9902 S, the first digital TV receiver with an integrated hard disc, and the Nokia Mediamaster
9650 S, a twin access satellite receiver, designed to open a wider world of choice to digital viewers.

These two new digital television receivers for the home environment have been designed to take advantage of the growing opportunities identified by Nokia in the digital TV receiver markets of Europe and the Middle East.

Operator and service provider solutions
Nokia Networks Senior Vice President, Dr. J.T. Bergqvist, said at CeBIT today that Nokia is well positioned to serve operators in the 3G era.

"In GPRS and 3G networks we are confident that we are moving firmly towards network leadership," confirmed Bergqvist, "with our targeted 35% market share in 3G already within reach."

As a frontrunner in TETRA digital professional mobile technology, Nokia today revealed its unique capability to provide operators with complete TETRA infrastructure for one million users in only one year.

Network solutions for corporates
Today Nokia launched a world first, the Nokia MW1352, a cutting-edge DSL connectivity gateway enabling corporates easy access to data with the freedom of mobility.

Also for corporates, such as banks and financial institutions, wanting to offer secure but user-friendly mobile e-commerce services, Nokia launched the Nokia Activ Signet Solution, which enables certificate and digital signature validation and online certificate enrollment.

The company announced the availability of its new eight port SHDSL (single line high-speed) DSL line card, ideal for small and medium-sized corporates looking to improve the loop reach capability of their networks as well as achieve higher symmetric speeds. In addition, the new generation A030 Wireless LAN Access Point was introduced, offering fast mobile access to the Internet and corporate intranets.

Nokia today also introduced new products for the Internet space. The new Nokia SSL Product Family, premiering with the Nokia CA200 and the Nokia CA600 appliances, dramatically improves secure transaction performance and accelerates networks for a seamless E-commerce experience. The Nokia IP51, IP55 and IP530 Network Appliances extend and enhance the existing range of IP Application Platftorms. The Nokia IP51 and 55 extend the concept of a network appliance into the small office segment, while the Nokia IP530 is a next generation IP Network Security platform, which means increased speed and functionality, delivering unparalleled levels of secure throughput.
