Nokia unveils a powerful performer for mobile professionals

Nokia today introduced a new refined member of its family of classic phones. The Nokia 6310 is a powerful package of technology, providing fast and easy access to mobile services with WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) over GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), as well as enhanced connectivity with integrated Bluetooth technology. The Nokia 6310 is primarily targeted for mobile professionals who need a reliable tool and innovative, easy-to-use solutions to manage their business and leisure lives. The phone will be available during the fourth quarter, 2001.

"The Nokia 6310 is a continuation in the evolution of the Nokia classic phone category, setting references for mobile professionals who value efficiency and productivity as well as use their phone as a life management tool. Encased in a harmonious, tasteful exterior, GPRS, Bluetooth and SyncML technology will make it a true performer for mobile professionals," said Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones.

GPRS enables an always-on WAP connection. Whenever the phone is turned on and has been GPRS configured, there is an immediate connection to services via the GPRS network, where GPRS networks are available. GPRS sends data in packets, making billing schemes possible based on the amount of information sent or received, rather than on connection time. The phone also supports HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data) for flexible data connections. The Nokia 6310 integrates the latest WAP features with support for WAP release 1.2.1. It enables the phone to receive "service message indicators" where a WAP page alert is displayed with a convenient link to a WAP site. This makes push-based mobile services such as stock alerts or continuous newscasts possible. WAP release 1.2.1 also enables the Nokia 6310 to store cookies, much in the same way as cookies are stored in a PC web browser. The next time you visit a WAP site, the phone is able to recall what information you specifically looked at and display the same window.

The Nokia 6310 incorporates WTAI (Wireless Telephony Application Interface) Public Library which enables you to make a phone call from a WAP site. With this application, it is no longer necessary to terminate a WAP session to make a phone call. Instead you can temporarily interrupt it to make the call, after which you automatically return to the site, for example when browsing a car rental site to reserve a car. With vCard support it is possible to automatically save contact information such as a business card listed on a WAP site to the phone's memory. Similarly, vCal support allows you to save a calendar appointment from a WAP site to the phone's calendar.

The phone also has an integrated Bluetooth module, which supports both wireless data and audio connectivity with compatible Bluetooth devices within a range of ten meters. With SyncML support, the Nokia 6310 takes the management of personal information to a new level of productivity and ease. SyncML makes remote data synchronization possible, allowing you to stay in sync regardless of your physical location. The phone's calendar, contacts directory, and to-do list can be synchronized remotely with office applications or web-based calendar services using a WAP connection. Local synchronization can be done using Bluetooth, infrared or cable.

The Nokia 6310 comes with enhanced voice features, including voice commands for pre-set phone functionality and a voice recording application for recording memos and conversations. It also comes with new clock and timing features such as a countdown timer and stopwatch, and supports concatenated short messaging. An exchange rate converter makes it possible to calculate multiple conversion rates, and a "to-do" list is included as a new menu item.

The Nokia 6310 is an EGSM 900/1800 dual band mobile phone. It weighs 111 g, and measures 47 mm in width and 129 mm in length. It has a talk time of 3 hours and a standby time of up to 20 days, depending on network conditions. The phone comes in three color options and is compatible with most of the accessories in the 6100 series mobile phones and the Nokia 6210. An inbox BPS-2 1100 mAh Li-Polymer battery provides enhanced battery performance.
