Nokia today unveiled its newest phone model in its fashion category, further cementing the company's position as the world's leading design house for mobile communications. The small and light-weight Nokia 8310 is the epitome of style in mobile phones and the first Nokia phone in the market to incorporate GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) technology. It is stylishly provocative, taking phone personalization to an entirely new level with a tridimensional surface and translucent layering for a unique aesthetic look. The phone will be available in the third quarter, 2001.

The Nokia 8310 introduces a progressive design language, incorporating the latest look and feel in colors, materials, finishes, and design details. Front and back Xpress-on covers and a translucent window frame offer a dramatically changeable appearance, allowing more freedom than ever to personalize the phone exterior. Overlapping translucent surfaces and colors make the beauty of this phone more than skin deep. Shiny chrome surface finish on the main function keys, power key, bezel around the display, and battery release button afford it dazzling detail. It also flaunts a white backlight. It is urban and independent, focused yet casual, making it a phone as unique as its individual users.
The Nokia 8310 comes with an array of attractive features such as an integrated FM radio and a dual headset. The new headset makes call and radio management convenient: incoming calls are easily managed while the radio is on and it is possible to browse the web, play games, write messages, and use the phonebook while listening to the radio. Advanced voice features include voice dialling and voice activation of the radio. The phone also supports voice commands to activate the infrared function and change user profiles from, for example, "Outdoor" to "Meeting." An additional attraction is the possibility to record voice memos of up to 3 minutes in length.
GPRS technology will allow users to get more out of mobility and personalization. Whenever the phone is turned on and has been GPRS configured, there is an immediate connection to services via the GPRS network, where GPRS networks are available. GPRS sends data in packets, making billing schemes possible based on the amount of information sent or received, rather than on connection time. WAP over GPRS will allow users to do things like browse restaurant guides or see what's showing at the local cinema. The phone also supports HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data) for flexible data connections.
The Nokia 8310 integrates the latest WAP features with support for WAP release 1.2.1. It enables the phone to receive "service message indicators" where a WAP page alert is displayed with a convenient link to a WAP site. This makes push-based mobile services such as continuous newscasts and shopping tips from favorite retailers possible. WAP release 1.2.1 also enables the Nokia 8310 to store cookies, much in the same way as cookies are stored in a PC web browser. The next time you visit a WAP site, the phone is able to recall what information you specifically looked at and display the same window.
The Nokia 8310 is an EGSM 900/1800 dual band mobile phone and comes in 9 inbox color combinations. It weighs 84g, is 97mm in length and 66cc in size. It has a talk time of up to 4 hours and a standby time of up to 400 hours with the radio off and 20 hours with the radio on.
