Jaakko Pöyry Group appointed consultant to investigate transportation link across Fehmarn belt

BPI-Consult GmbH in Germany, which is a part of Jaakko Pöyry Group's Infrastructure & Environment business group, has been commissioned by the German Ministry of Transportation to carry out an Enquiry of Commercial Interest (ECI) regarding a fixed link across the Fehmarn Belt. The ECI aims at investigating the willingness and ability of the private sector to design, build, finance and operate a fixed transportation link between Germany and Denmark across the Fehmarn Belt.

The contract was awarded to a group of four companies: BPI-Consult, Arthur Andersen Real Estate, de Witt Oppler and Prognos. These companies will co-operate with the Danish company Sund&Baelt, which has been appointed by the Danish Ministry of Transport to cover the Danish aspects of the transportation link under investigation.

The outcome of the Enquiry of Commercial Interest will be a summary which will serve as a decision basis for both the German and Danish Ministries of Transportation on whether and how the fixed link across the Fehmarn Belt will be realised. Depending on the technical solution, tunnel or bridge, the construction costs will be in the range of EUR 2.8 to 4.4 billion.

The contract received is an important milestone in Jaakko Pöyry Group's involvement in privately financed transportation mega-projects. The Infrastructure & Environment business group plays already an important role in privately financed transportation projects, e.g. as an independent checking and site engineer for the Taiwan high speed rail project, which is an investment of more than EUR 15 billion.
