Nokia and ISS Enable Secure Polish Parliamentary Elections

Warsaw, Poland, 23 September 2001 -- Nokia and Internet Security Systems (ISS) today announced that they provided the Polish National Elections Committee (NEC) with an intrusion detection system solution to enable the secure, uninterrupted counting of votes during the recent Polish parliamentary elections. The Nokia and ISS solution is based on their enterprise-class intrusion detection appliance, RealSecure(TM) for Nokia.

RealSecure(TM) for Nokia allowed the NEC to eliminate unauthorized access attempts into their computers and helps prevent the destabilization of the election system. The intrusion detection system solution for the NEC is the largest one of its kind in Central Europe.

"RealSecure(TM) is a first-class security system used by the biggest companies and governmental institutions in the world. Due to its implementation on the Nokia platform, a quick and effective installment was possible as well as uninterrupted network traffic monitoring and the elimination of attacks - regardless of their internal or external nature", said Pawe³ Marciniak, Business Development Manager, Nokia Internet Communications.

"Because of the exceptional scale of the project, as well as the distribution of election districts, we decided to partner with Nokia who provided more than 40 high-class network devices. The network devices have a unique architecture, are reliable and can be managed remotely both from the central location and in a variety of geographical locations which is very important in this case," said Micha³ Jarski, Business Manager from Internet Security Systems.

In each Polish election district, anywhere from a few dozen to more than 40 terminals are installed, through which each district's voting data is incorporated into a local database. Data is then transferred through a network to the central database where the votes are counted. The results are available to all citizens through an Internet visual system created by Wirtualna Polska SA. All important network points, especially the network connections with the Internet, are monitored and protected by the RealSecure(TM) for Nokia appliance.
