Northrop Grumman Awarded Contract to Supply Advanced Sorting Systems to Spanish Postal Service

BALTIMORE, May 28, 2002 -- A Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) subsidiary, Solystic, has received a contract to provide the Spanish postal service with next-generation sorting systems that can process flat mail (magazines, catalogues and circulars) at more than twice the speed of existing equipment.

Solystic, a French-based business unit of Northrop Grumman's Automation and Information Systems Division, will install seven TOP 2000 systems in Correos y Telegrafos facilities in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia and Vitoria. Delivery will take place over the next two years. The value of the contract was not disclosed.

"This award represents a critical step toward expanding Solystic's leadership in the rapidly growing flats-sorting market," said Pierre-Andre Barriere, president and chief executive officer of Solystic. "The TOP 2000 should continue to generate strong business opportunities through at least the end of the decade."

The TOP 2000 system provides an operational throughput of more than 40,000 items per hour. It also incorporates other labor-reducing automated features such as a tray unloader, a tray-handling system and a label applicator.

Headquartered in Baltimore, Md., Northrop Grumman's Automation and Information Systems Division has been providing automation design, equipment fabrication, field deployment and logistics support to the United States Postal Service for more than 11 years. The division is part of the Electronic Systems sector, a world leader in the design, development, and manufacture of defense electronics systems, including airborne radar systems, navigation systems, electronic warfare systems, precision weapons, airspace management systems, air defense systems, communications systems, space systems, marine systems, oceanic and naval systems, logistics systems, and automation and information systems.
