British Airways World Cargo Selects Descartes as Preferred Global Customs Filing and Messaging Provider

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla., Oct. 5, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Descartes Global User Group Conference -- Descartes Systems Group (TSX:DSG) (Nasdaq:DSGX) announced that British Airways (BA) World Cargo has selected Descartes' Global Logistics Network (GLN) as its preferred global solution for air cargo messaging for customs filing, e-freight and other electronic data interchange.

"We've managed our cargo bookings for a long time as a member of Descartes' Global Freight Exchange," said Steve Gunning, Managing Director BA World Cargo. "We're extending our commitment to Descartes as our preferred supplier because of the broad range of high-quality and global services provided by its Global Logistics Network, its overall reliability and its commitment to customer service."

Descartes' federated network, the GLN, standardizes logistics transactions for airlines, like BA World Cargo, with messaging services that simplify the management of imports, exports and domestic shipments. The GLN's messaging services help airlines and their customers:

  • meet global customs requirements such as the upcoming Import Control System (ICS) and Export Control System (ECS);
  • monitor shipment events between airports, including matching and optimizing route map milestones against actual event timing;
  • simplify shipment management and invoicing;
  • comply with industry standards, such as the IATA e-freight initiative; and
  • transmit accurate tracking updates to customers.

"As a preferred provider, Descartes is committed to helping BA World Cargo and its community of trading partners standardize and automate its air cargo processes," said Jan Markill, Vice President, GLN at Descartes. "Descartes' federated network, the GLN, allows BA World Cargo's community of customers to efficiently submit their consignment data electronically through a single network. This streamlines the shipment management process and improves overall efficiency of service."

BA World Cargo and its ground handling associates are standardizing procedures to gather and use electronic shipment information to streamline customs filing. Descartes is hosting education sessions to show customers how to quickly and efficiently connect to the GLN.  Customers will be contacted individually and further details can also be found at www.descartes.com/ba_edi.
