Nokia and PLDT sign broadband DSL deal for new services in the Philippines

Nokia has signed a contract to supply digital subscriber line (DSL) broadband IP access network equipment to Philippines Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), making PLDT the premier ADSL service provider in the Philippines. Nokia will supply PLDT with a complete end-to-end broadband solution, including Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) and related services for residential and business users.

The frame contract includes the ATM-based Nokia D50e Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers (DSLAM), which support SDSL and both full-rate and G.Lite Asymmetric DSL (ADSL) technologies. Nokia will also supply its Nokia SMS 10,000 remote access node, a variety of CPE, as well as a broad range of training and support services. Delivery and equipment installations have already started.

"The Nokia Broadband IP Access Solution based on DSL and IP enables us to be the first to offer high quality Fast Internet Services in the Philippines. In this fast growing global business, this is an important initiative for PLDT to introduce new applications, such as secure remote work, streaming media and enhanced home connectivity solutions to our subscribers," said Al Panlilio, Vice President of PLDT.

Corporate customers will enjoy superior quality services offered by Nokia's high-end customer premises equipment, assuring PLDT a fast take-up of high-end users. Nokia Broadband IP Access solution provides a complete set of tools for operators to bring broadband services quickly and at a reasonable cost to enterprises and residential users alike. With the Nokia Broadband IP Access solution, individual end-users can enjoy fast access to the Internet, while business customers can experience remote access to the office and secure home working.

DSL is a technology that enables higher bandwidth over copper lines for additional services such as streaming media, secure remote work and fast Internet access at connection speeds that typically range from 1.5 Mbps to 6/8Mbps. In combination with other technologies such as Wireless LAN, home users can benefit from wireless high-speed Internet access.

PLDT is the principal supplier of domestic and international telecommunications services in the Philippines and is utilising its five principal business lines - Fixed Line, Mobile, Internet, Cable and Satellite - as the foundation for its convergence strategy. Having established the most extensive broadband and integrated networks in the country, PLDT is now positioned as the preferred full service provider, offering a comprehensive menu of products and services to match the needs of a growing and increasingly sophisticated market.

Note to Editors:

ADSL (Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line) is a higher-speed alternative to Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and analogue modems, utilising the copper wiring that already connects each home. Besides higher bandwidth, ADSL has another advantage for consumers: a single twisted pair can carry both voice calls (using existing analogue lines) and high-speed digital data.
