Nokia today introduced a new product in its classic phone category. The Nokia 6310i is a tri-band mobile phone operating on 5 continents wherever GSM 900/1800/1900 networks are available, providing mobile Internet access via WAP over GPRS, fast data connections over HSCSD, and enhanced connectivity with integrated Bluetooth technology. The Nokia 6310i also enables downloading of personal Java(TM) applications. The shipments are expected to begin globally in the second quarter, 2002.

Java technology complements WAP in providing additional features and functionalities. The Nokia 6310i supports the standard Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME(TM), a version of Java technology designed for small consumer electronics products. The Nokia 6310i Java platform is based on Mobile Information Device Profile 1.0 (MIDP 1.0), which enables application developers to create exciting applications for mobile devices.
The Nokia 6310i users will be able to download new kinds of interactive and graphical games, business applications and terminal enhancements. These Java applications can be downloaded to the Nokia 6310i via WAP or from a PC by using the Nokia PC suite. Examples of downloadable applications include interactive maps, currency and measure converters, bilingual phrase books, games, and sports training calendars.
Nokia will be demonstrating exciting Java applications on the Nokia 6310i with leading European operators, T-Mobile and Telefónica Móviles at the CeBIT 2002 trade fair.
The Nokia 6310i incorporates a mobile wallet application, which allows users to make convenient and reliable on-line transactions via WAP. The security module, Wireless Identity Module (WIM), enables users to digitally sign their transactions. With the wallet feature, it is easy to shop via WAP, using your credit card information to pay for purchases. The wallet application supports the Electronic Commerce Modeling Language (ECML) standard. ECML is an open Internet standard (IETF RFC 2706) for digital wallets and online merchants that facilitates the automatic exchange of transaction information.
