Vaisala Group has acquired 100% of the stock of Global Atmospherics
Corporation of Tucson, Arizona, USA, from Sankosha Group. Global
Atmospherics is the world's largest lightning detection equipment
manufacturer and lightning data services operator. Acquisition price
was USD 13.2 million.
The revenues of Global Atmospherics for the fiscal year 2001 (ended
March 31, 2001) were USD 15.3 million (previous year USD 14.3
million). Profit before interest and taxes was USD 466 thousand
(previous year USD 1.032 million). Total assets were USD 9.7 million.
Shareholders' equity was USD 3.0 million. The company employs 120
people.
Global Atmospherics is the leading manufacturer of standalone
lightning detection instruments and LF (Low Frequency) lightning
detection networks and has recently developed VHF lightning detection
technology. The company owns and operates a USA-wide lightning sensor
network and sells various lightning data products to the US National
Weather Service, airports, power utilities, recreational facilities,
insurance companies and weather service providers. The company is also
participating in lightning data services in Canada, France, Central
Europe and Benelux countries.
In early 2000, Vaisala acquired another lightning detection network
manufacturer, Dimensions SA of France, which currently belongs to the
Remote Sensing Division of Vaisala. It is currently the leading
manufacturer of VHF technology Total Lightning Detection Networks.
Vaisala intends to integrate Global Atmospherics into this division.
There are remarkable synergies in combining the two network product
lines under one business unit. This will provide optimized systems for
the various needs of lightning detection network clients.
The Remote Sensing Division will focus in two new and expanding fields
of atmospheric measurement, nowcasting and meso-scale forecasting.
These are fields where severe weather phenomena that rise within a
relatively short time, like thunderstorms, windshear, local rainfall
and hailstorms, can be predicted accurately. In the field of lightning
detection and localization, Vaisala will, with the acquisition of
Global Atmospherics Inc. and previous acquisition of Dimensions SA,
elevate into a global market leadership position.
