ETSI standardizes optimal resource handling in optical networks

”This standard enables the building of efficient and dynamic networks while creating high fiber utilization for both data and video services, says Christer Bohm, CTO at Net Insight. One avoids the static configurations and topologies inherent in traditional networks”.

ETSI’s (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) standard for data link aspects in DTM (Dynamic synchronous Transfer Mode) specifies the dynamic resource-, topology-, control channel and boot strap handling. The official standard document is published on October 23, 2002 and is identified as ES 201 803-2-1.

”The new standard details the plug-and-play properties which makes the technology so simple to deploy, something which should be of great interest to new operators”, says Börje Lindén, CTO, VLT.

The DTM standardization effort was initiated by Net Insight during the winter 1998/1999. ETSI have previously approved the core of the technology including the Ethernet transport over DTM, which enables a broader introduction of IP-services. Amongst the members in ETSI’s working group which actively support the process are VLT, BAE Systems and Allied Telesis to be found.

The standardization effort is an ongoing process and in the near future ETSI is expected to approve the standards for DTM physical interfaces for speeds up to 40 Gbps.

About DTM
The DTM technology is a development of the TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) network principle. Communication occurs in channels where the resources is bound to the channel during its lifetime. DTM’s dynamic properties lend itself to adjust the capacity in order to adapt to data, voice or video traffic. The combination of effective capacity utilization while delivering superior quality of service which makes DTM unique in relation to other network technologies. DTM’s transparent properties makes it easy to integrate with existing infrastructure. Network operators may therefore make a smooth transition into the next generation optical networks and deploy the network at the rate customer requests the services.
