Nokia brings a new server solution for sophisticated communications

Nokia today introduced a new server solution for its operator customers. The Nokia Presence Server will enable operators to offer various applications and services for new ways of staying in touch. The Nokia Presence Server will manage, store and distribute the presence information as well as handle subscriptions and updates. It will be commercially available during the first half of 2003.

Presence will enable enhanced phone books and virtual bonding within different groups, such as family, friends and colleagues. With presence, mobile phone users will be able to create dynamic, personalized user profiles, including information on their activities, availability, and location. This information will be stored on the operator network and can be updated and shared with other mobile phone users.

A mobile phone user will be able to inform his colleagues, or family and friends, of his or her activities and whereabouts easily and conveniently. For example, the user can set his or her current phone profile to  “Meeting” and advise colleagues to send a multimedia or text message instead of a voice call. Colleagues will be able to check someone’s profile status before contacting and act according to the information they receive. Alternatively, a member of a mobile game community can check the presence of others to see if they would be available for a virtual game session.

“With presence, operators will have a chance to create and offer new services for their subscribers and stimulate growth and revenues from all forms of mobile communication, ranging from voice to data. The presence concept is familiar from the Internet world. But presence in the mobile context will bring far more enhanced and exciting possibilities to create applications,” said Niklas Savander, vice president and general manager, Mobile Software, Nokia.

“Mobile users will define when and how they prefer to be contacted and what type of presence information they would like to share with others. Presence will also let a mobile user personalize his or her appearance visible to other users with new and powerful ways of self-expression,” he added.

The presence server will provide mobile phone users with privacy and protection capabilities. Users can always determine who can and cannot access their presence information. The server will be capable of hosting different lists defined by the user, from an open profile for everyone to more detailed or personal information shared only with the closest contacts.

The Nokia Presence Server is a scalable operator grade system. It has a flexible and modular architecture that will support different business models and revenue streams and will be easy and cost-efficient to deploy, providing a possibility for a standard based, server-to-server connectivity to share presence information between different operator domains. The presence solution will protect operator’s investment and allow a smooth expansion of its customer base.

The Nokia Presence Server is built according to the Wireless Village Version 1.1 Specifications, thus providing interoperability between mobile devices and servers supporting an industry standard protocol. The future development of Wireless Village specifications will be done within Open Mobile Alliance (OMA).

The new server will also include Mobile Web services interface that will allow operators to collaborate with third party content and service providers, and thus increase their portfolio of more versatile and personal services.
