Nokia’s Series 60 Platform chosen as Finnish IT Product of the Year

The Finnish Information Processing Association (FIPA) has chosen the Series 60, a software platform designed for smart phones, as the IT Product of the Year. According to the Association, the Series 60 has become an evident success in a highly competitive global market in a very short time.

“Today’s award is important recognition not only for our software product itself, but also for the team responsible for its development. The Series 60 product development team, with its top expertise, has definitely been a key factor behind the platform’s swift global success,” said Pertti Korhonen, Executive Vice President, Nokia Mobile Software. “Thus far, Series 60 has been licensed by mobile phone manufacturers representing approximately 60 per cent of the global mobile phone markets,” Korhonen added.

The Series 60, originally developed by Nokia, is today licensed as a source code product to mobile phone manufacturers. The source code enables licensees to further develop the platform. Matsushita (Panasonic), Samsung, Sendo, Siemens and Nokia are licensees of the Series 60. The software platform has been designed to run on Symbian OS, an operating system for advanced, data-enabled mobile phones.

The Series 60 was introduced to the market one year ago. The Nokia 7650 imaging phone is the first mobile device on the market that is based on the softaware platform.
