Nokia introduces a TETRA network based location solution for professional use

Nokia today introduced the world's first location solution for professional mobile radio use. The solution enables the location of units patrolling with the TETRA radio assisted location solution with no external devices attached. This innovation brings new dimensions to managing resources in the field giving the possibility to optimise geographical availability of the units and saving cost. The new location system also improves the security of the personnel by making it possible for the dispatcher to locate them in an emergency situation, for example.

Handportable assisted locating is done with the dispatcher sending an short data service (SDS) query to the Nokia THR880 TETRA handheld radio or Nokia TMR880 TETRA mobile radio. The radio responds automatically by measuring the field strengths of the neighbouring cells and sending that information over the TETRA network to a location server, which calculates the location of the terminal and forwards the information to the application.

Nokia TETRA radio assisted location solution is a natural add-on to any Nokia TETRA network service. It provides the location of the TETRA handsets and mobile radios in the network area, including indoors and underground tunnels.

The service has been adopted and converted to Nokia TETRA Solution from commercial services designed by Nokia to benefit the authorities in their daily routines. So far this kind of locating has been possible only with GSM networks or with special GPS devices.

New Nokia TETRA radio assisted location solution will be available in the second half of 2003.

Nokia provides open application protocol interfaces (API) to its partners to enable application development for TETRA networks. Nokia developer community TWISP ensures seamless integration between the applications and Nokia TETRA networks.
